Question about 2001 Chevrolet Tracker

I have a 2001 4 door chevy tracker and I need part no. for seal on front of transfer case that drives the front diff.

That is most likely the transfer case that is doing this not the differential.

I have a 1994 Chevy 1500 z71 I have replaced the front diff with the same gear ratio and know my four wheel drive is binding up and idk what is causing it to do that I need help


4wd vehicles in the main do not have 3rd diff in the transfer case (unlike all wheel drive vehicles) to allow uneven torque between front and read diffs to dissipate
that means that if you are driving on hard surface ( sealed roads ) there becomes what is referred to as a torque wind up in the drive train .This places all gears ,chains under extreme pressure and prevents gear changing ( shifting out of gear)
To overcome this problem, only select 4wd when driving in snow ,rain, mud, gravel or any surface that allows the wheels to slip and so even out the torque wind up.
If you had to replace the front diff that may have been the reason as front diffs are predominently weaker than rear diffs because of the way the teeth act on each other and the torque wind up will break the weakest part

remove the drain plugs from the diff units and check for metal bits. Check for metal in the transfer case oil as it sounds like a bearing in the diff section of the transfer case has failed.. There is a small diff here to allow the front wheels to travel at a different speed to the rear unit to allow for driving over un even surfaces or speed bumps.

best bet is junkyard replacement. worst case. remove tc and get a longer driveshaft to the rear end

make sure the front shaft spins near the front diff, if it does check the hubs, if there ok possible diff fault. if the shaft doesnt spin then there will be a transfer case fault.

you shouldnt be in 4 wheel drive on bitumen you will get "bind up" of drive train which can cause damage or excessive freeplay in other components in drive train, inspect freeplay in universal joints on tailshafts, centre bearing and diff backlash specs, some backlash is quite normal, inspect trans/transfer case mounts also.

Front end does not engage in 4-wheel drive


The front diff in this model requires air pressure to engage. There is an electric pump for this purpose and once the pressure rises and remains where it's meant to, the pump shuts off and the dash light indicating 4WD will remain lit. It is sealed. There should be no leaks. If there is air coming out the top, do you mean out of the diff breather pipe? (The diff breather should be connected to a hose that goes up and is clipped next to the radiator.) If it is coming out of the diff breather, you have a punctured (worn out) diff engaging diaphragm which can only be replaced by stripping the diff casing.

Place vehicle in 4wd (high or low). This will hold the front drive shaft still for the rest of the test. Jack up the front end of the vehicle. Remove the actuator. Have a buddy spin the right front wheel while you use a long punch or screwdriver to try to manually engage the diff. The left front wheel should spin in the other direction if the diff is good. Also before you check the diff you need to grab the front driveshaft and make sure it is locked, If it spins freely when the truck is in park and in 4wd with the front end raised then problem is in transfer case. If you can't make the diff engage manually with punch then the problem is in the diff. If front diff engages manually then the problem is the actuator. Hope this helps..
