Question about 2004 Toyota Matrix

2 Answers

My matrix is burning a lot of oil. dealer said it needs a new head gasket- about $2500.00 i then took it to my mechanic who performed a compression test. it failed cyl. 1&4. says the headgasket is fine, but it needs replacement rings and that this is a known toyota problem, but doesnt have a recall on it. he says the dealership would have to do it and it would cost about twice as much. it is 6 yrs. old with 47000 miles. any suggestions on my rights?

The toyota celicas had a similar problem with the rings on the pistons getting sludged up and the engine burning alot of oil,and if im not mistaken..there is a tech service bulletin on ways to correct or help this problem without pullin the engine apart, you could also try doing the upper cylinder cleaning that GM has done to their vehicles for years,it comes in a can and instructions are right on the bottle, sometimes this will break up the sludge on your rings, hope this helps

I bought a acura 96 car drives great just smokes bad uses min oil

Blue smoke often means bad rings. Expensive repair. Black smoke could mean bad valves. Also an expensive repair.

Check compression. Your mechanic can do that easily, and should not cost a lot.

My Alto VXR 2004 has a problem that its engine oil is getting lesser fast in quantity. I am using Zic A as engine oil.local car mechanic says engine weak he says gas kit and engine head problem

is is odometer reading?
all cars burn oil if driven real fast, at 80mph, lots.
what i need is ,
1: speeds driven. avg.
2: and what weight, oil , is it hot there, sure, then run 10w-40 oil.
3: how many liters of oil per miles.
some cars go for years, burning 1quart of oil per 3000 mile.s
1L/5000 km to 1L /1000 km. (new car to old)
even more. on older engines.
if the engine runs good, drive it and change oil more often.
check oil at every petrol fill up, and learn what your engine needs
all engine burn oil by design. its a fact.

do an engine compression test.
2 times wide open throttle.
on a warm engine
if lower that spec, 150psi?
then add 1 teaspoon, of oil to spark hole , see if compression rises
if it does, its rings are old.
post the numbers, if all are 150 or more , drive it like you stole it.
half joking there, but drive it. and change oil often and check oil levels
every fill up or every other (depends on reality)

GASKET.
post the compression test readings. only NUMBERS count.
we need numbers and engine size.

Hi. I can give you a simple, but time consuming test to do to check your intermittent compression problem. New hydraulic lifters cause a lot of problems until its settled. Remove the camshafts and the hydraulic lifters. Take each hydraulic lifter and put it in a vice(becarefull not to damage them) and squeeze out all the oil in the lifters. Then put them back and replace camshaft and allign timing marks. Check compression ratio. What happens sometimes is that the oil pressure is too high(stuck oil pressure release valve or cold thick oil) and this causes the oil pressure to put so much pressure on the hydraulic lifters, that it slightly forces the valve open. That will cause your low compression as well as backfire through the intake.

2006 subaru forester burning oil

never-- I repeat never --use a used car dealer to do repairs on your car
The people employed are seldom qualified mechanics and they only know how to "bodgie" jobs just to get the car ready for a sale
oil will not leak from a head if the engine is running well , but oil will leak from faulty rocker cover gaskets
from your description, I suspect that when the car went in for the head gaskets a clapped out motor was fitted instead ( check engine numbers on the papers )
If you need a motor , there are plenty of good engines from japanese
engine importers
But at best do not have anything to do with that shop as the engine rebuild could be changing the engine back for your original motor

Would a blown headgasket cause lost compression

well its like this.
if indeed the oil ports through the head through the bolck and down into the oil pan then indeed the engine is going to be oil starved.
if its oil starved for any durations the pistins will begin to melt.causing compression to be lost.
head gasket is the least of your worrys here.
the head gasket is going to survive a lot longer than the pistons in an oil starve situation.
thank goodness its an inline six.
these are very simple to fix.you might want to pull the sparkplugs and look at the tips to see if you can see melted aluminim on them.
you can also do a compression test to verify comp loss.if theres no compression you will have to pull the head anyway ifs its the gasket or piston.now if there was a preexisting head gasket condition yes it could be causing the two cyl to exchange compression.but a head gasket will not be caused by oil stave.

hope this helps
thank you

Could be just the OIL COOLER. VW IS CORRECT.
If the oil cooloer fails internely you will have a mix of coolant and oil. In the engine and in the Radiator,

But not to say the other guys were wrong...
