It will not go into gear unless the brake lights come on, it's a safety feature. make sure your brake light switch fuse isn't blown. may be blown brake light bulbs. check fuse 1st. hope this helps!!

I have difficulty in changing gears

Easiest thing to do is change the transmission oil and see if you're still having the issue. Usually what you're describing can be fixed by just changing the oil.

60 series toyota cruiser has trouble changing gears only 1st 2nd gear auto

You have a stuck solenoid in the auto, The only way to fix it is to remove the solenoids and manually free them up, This means removing the oil and oil pan and removing the solenoids.

When its cold it seems to slip out of gear rather than change to 3rd. aafter its warm it seems to run like a top

It will be good to have the gear box oil changed to confirm that the oil within is overused.
If the oil change solves the issue , then have the oil changed once again after the car runs for few months so that the gear box lubrication comes good.
if not the gear box has to be opened to check for faulty links or notches.

Overheats, and wont switch gears at times.

Well overheating and not starting are possibly 2 different issues. Oil is not the cause of overheating. Thermostat, water pump, electric fans and viscous fan are causes for overheating plus the sensors that control the fans. Not starting could be caused by the overheating but most likely its a fuel or ignition issue.
