My alternator has gone out and will not charge my battery. If I have someone jump start my car my battery will give me maybe 5 miles before it dies. Im looking at buying and installing a new alternator but have had people warn me about making sure i get it polarized correctly, otherwise it will just blow out again and i will be stuck with another blown alternator. Im looking for some more specific directions or a model/guide to follow for correctly polarizing. Thanks.

Sorry to say , get a voltmeter and go through the wiring starting at the fuse box and follow on from there, that includes the ground circuits, its time consuming but revesing polarity can cause untold damage

I have a 2005 dodge durango. My car was left on and the battery died. I jumped it and it wouldn't hold a charge. Since then, I've changed the battery and the alternator and the battery light came on again...

Take to auto store and have alt and electrical checked sounds like may have toasted the alt when jumping it happened to me they do not make them like they used to. They over heat very easy and poof.gone.

My 1993 Toyota Corolla stalls and will not stay running.

If changing the battery does not solve problem, or only solves it until the battery dies then have the alternator tested. I have noticed on several occasions with a couple of my vehicles that at times of very high moisture in the air they do not stay running, once the humidity goes down they are fine.

Transmission or altenator?

I would say change the alternator out. Start with the simplest and cheapest factor first. Without the alternator keeping the engine running its hard to put it any gear.

1997 Carolla- engine dies when shift to reverse or drive, starts again when put in park. Is this a transmission problem or starter/ignition problem?

There is a switch that only only allows you to start the engine in Park or Neutral. It sounds as if yours is faulty or has a bad connection. Finding it will be the problem.

Situation: My battery has died. I would like to place my car in Neutral so that I can have another car give me a jump. Problem: I cannot place my car in neutral because my car will not allow me to...

You need a portable jump starter, may be a friend has one, or swap batteries with another car that has a battery similar to yours (I.E. top vs Side posts and size) a size that will fit same or a little smaller OK and polarity same so you don't cross connect or reverse the polarity remember the + red post goes to red+ and the - black goes to black- post. Then start move car to roomier area then swap battery back then jump start to get it home. and remember to charge your battery with a charger driving does not fully charge and a low battrey may start your car but it makes the starter get hotter from pulling higher amps for a longer time.

I'm driving down the road and my truck dies, i'll jump start it and it goes for a couple of blocks and dies again. i've had the alternator and battery checked and they say they're both ok. any suggestions

It could be that you are loosing a connection to main power on fuse panel but it is unlikely. In most cases if this is happening it is because the alternator is not charging. I know you will say you have had it tested but most testing procedures do not load test the alternator and does not show the amperage output of an alternator, they show voltage. In most cases there is not enough to back up the rate of charge and run the car so it dies again...
