Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

My 2002 jeep grand cherokee will sometimes over heat when climbing big hills. It has been an intermitten problem. A shop replaced the clutch fan, water pump and thermostat. After repaired ran it well over an hour.. at idle and drove it around and it never overheated. But as soon as I left and got 30 miles away (going up and down hills) it overheated. The temp tends to climb as I get midway up the hill and when I crest the hill it is between half and three quarters on the temp guage and even though I am decending the temp goes to red line. Around town and fairly level freeway it runs cool. It has no leaks. Help? confused jes

You mention big hills, and other wise no problem, you may be taxing the transmission , have a trans cooler installed, it may cure all your problems, and good for the trans, heat is the trans biggest killer

Over heats when it idles

Check clutch fan if you can spin it by hand freely with no resistance the clutch fan is bad.
if the clutch fan spins more than twice if you give it a good flip the clutch is bad.

I have a 2002 4x4 Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cyl. automatic. Engine sounds like the engine is idling high but it is only 700 RPM.at idle. Does this sound like a harmonic balancer?

It may be the radiator fan making all that racket. Usually when the engine is cold, the thermal fan clutch allows more "slip" --- this allows the fan to turn slower than the water pump pulley (less load on the engine). When the fan clutch detects more engine heat, it reduces slippage of the fan clutch and this results in the fan turning "faster". It's actually turning at the same speed as the water pump pulley. The "roaring" noise is the result of the fan pulling in more air through the radiator.

If the noise is present at all times, whether or not the engine is hot or cold, then the fan clutch might be malfunctioning.

I hope this helps.

Have a nice day !!!

My jeep 2000 Grand Cherokee Larado is over heating. I have changed the thermostat and coolant. The fan seems to stop turning when it over heats. What can be causing the fan to stop when it should be...

Replace the cooling fan clutch. It is the silverish round device that the fan attaches to. This component is heat sensitive and will only function correctly when hot. They are known to fail over time. Also inspect the radiator for good coolant flow. DO THIS when engine is cold only or have a shop check it out for you.

On the left side of the shifter is an overdrive lock-out button for use with towing/hauling or hill climbing. Depress it and you should be good to go.

1997 jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 liter V8. Water Pump. When I remove the big nut to remove the clutch fan. Will that lose the pulley that's attached to the water pump? I don't see bolts holding pulley wheel to the water pump? Is it pressed on or will it become loose when I remove clutch fan nut?
