SOURCE: idle to low

The idle is electronic, possible causes of this could be the idle air control valve, mass air flow sensor, and air hose from filter. You can verify if there are any leaks in your filter housing with a visual inspection, you can also remove the mass air flow sensor very easily and see if it is clogged with dirt.

SOURCE: 2001 Toyota 4runner idle rpm is too low

Hi Seanmcm21,
More than likely the low idle you are experiencing is caused by a dirty IAC valve located right under the throttle body itself. It needs to be cleaned out with carb cleaner. Remove the electrical connector, the two vacuum hoses, and two screws. To put it back, use a little sealant to seal it before screwing it back together but do not get the sealant inside the IAC valve. If this 4 Runner is a V6, you may need to replace the spark plugs if old. Make sure to purchase twin electrode NGK or Denso spark plugs and gap them to .043 with a gapper.

Will not idle

Check your idle air control valve, then make sure you are getting spark to the plugs and fuel to the engine.

91 Tercel - fuel injected - stuck in Fast Idle mode. Idle adjustment screw does not help. Throttle cable is at maximum slackness. Also, the car seems to start in 2nd gear. Very little pep from stop.

Start at the Air Conditioning idle up VSV. When your A/C is on the idle increases to compensate for the increased load. If your car starts in second gear your nuetral safety switch isn't working. Look at that as well.

Idle

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Idles too low

A clogged fuel injector would make the engine shake, and your power would be compromised.
Whe you changed the plugs, did you put Toyota plugs in, or a different brand? More often than not, using any other plug than plugs bought at a Toy dealer can make the engine run worse. The engines are designed with a specific plug. Also, replace the wires if they are older than 5 years.
