Question about 1993 Isuzu Trooper

2 Answers

Hello Fixya! I have a problem with the air-intakes below the windscreen on my Trooper 1993. I think the water-drains are blocked, because every time it rains and the vehicle is parked outside we are getting water in the footwells. How do I access them to unblock the drain-pipes? On my previous model (1990) there were access panels under the bonnet but in this one there are none. Best regards, Patrick Delafield.

Thanks Heimlich. This is very helpful, but I have a further point to raise: you say "remove the panel that runs across the bottom of the windshield"..yes, I guess that will be necessary, but can you please tell me how I do that?

    Thanks and best regards.

Possibly the condensation drain tube from your a/c. Another possibility might be underneath the fresh air inlet (grill in front of the windshield) might have it's drain holes plugged with grime allowing moisture to enter the cab. Can you tell where it's coming from as far as how high up on the firewall, kick panels, etc?

Most vehicles run the drain hoses down into the wheel wells. This would give you access to the tubes by removing the plastic inner fenders and probing the tubes with a piece of wire . If leaves have plugged the tubes from the top you will have to take off the windshield wipers, open the hood, and remove the panel that runs across the bottom of the windshield. You will locate the tubes on the outer edges of the vent ares at the lowest points. You should have enough access to reach in with your hand or a yard stick and remove the debris build up blocking the tubes. Again using a long piece of wire (in the tube) and a pitcher full of water you should be able to gently wash the rest of the mud out of the wiper/air vent well and out through the tubes.

A gentle blast from an air compressor will also clear the tubes from the bottom but will not remove the debris. With the age of your vehicle you may find that the drain tubes may be cracked or broken and need replacement. If the water is not pouring in through the blower motor it is possible that the drain tubes run through the passenger compartment and back outside .

On all the vehicles I have worked on there are normally a dozen screws or so, sometimes hidden under the front hood seal, that can be removed to lift the air intake grill for the cabin to gain access to the wiper link arms. To see a parts break down of the intake grill you can go to My Isuzu parts.com Or copy and paste:http://www.myisuzuparts.com/1993/657/6/6...

To remove the wipers , with a small screw driver gently pry the edge of the circles at the mounting base of the wiper . A small cap should pop off revealing a nut that when removed should allow you to lift the wiper assembly off the spline shaft.

When first driving forward there is a sound of rushing water heard from passenger front firewall area. is there an area that water can be trapped.

Yes there is. When your a/c runs it creates condensation which collects under the evaporator in a small collector, and then drains onto the ground. This is the puddle of water you will see under a parked car if the a/c has been running. If the drains are blocked the water will not drain away and you will hear water sloshing about. If it gets too full, the water will overflow and you will get water onto the front mats and you might get wet feet. You will need to find the drains under the car and clear what ever is blocking them. It is usually road grime and dirt. It might also be the drains at the front of the windscreen are blocked, although this usually wont end up in the car.

How do I unblocked drainage gutters and where are they?

On each side of windscreen the air intake has a hose to drain water out, it is either blocked or broken.

Water coming through air vents

clean out the drain under the windscreen and ensure that the drain hoses down inside the mudguards are not blocked . ON the dash controls close the vent to recirculate the cab air and not allow fresh air into the cab.

I have a 1993 Lumina Eurosport coupe with a 3.1 V6. Every time it rains, the front passenger side floor gets soaked. Exactly where are all the places it could be leaking, and what do I do in each case in...

below the windscreen there is a pleumn chamber that collects the water run off and drains it away normally inside the wheel arch. This drain becomes blocked from leaves etc and the water collected flows back through the vent into the car. This chamber has been known to rust out and drop the water directly into the cabin

Water leak in front passenger side water leaks from heater box area and runs underneath front carpet whenever it rains or when car is washed

you possibly have a leaky windshield. Try turning the heater blower on high , close all the windows and doors and get a squirt bottle with a soapy solution and start squirting it around the windshield edge and see if you get any bubbles from where you squirted the soapy solution. if you do WAH LAH you found where the water is coming in from.

heater air intake drain clogged with leaf bits.

My 1993 dodge dakota sports is leaking water into the cab on the passenger side its not threw the air vents and my ac fuse blows out evertime it happens

The only way water can get into the cab is either a blocked air vent drain, leaking windscreen seal or rubber, damaged panel joint, badly sealing wiper arm. badly sealing door. Try and follow a possible trail. Water will move great distances before dropping so the leak could be far from the results.

Water leaks into the vehicle on the front,

It could be a plain old fashioned leak around the windscreen - difficult to find but try sitting in the car while somebody plays a water hose over the windscreen.

It could also be a blocked drain in the ventilation system - fresh air is normally drawn in to a car via vents at the bottom of the windscreen. These vents normally lead to a "box" like structure where any water that enters the vents drops to the bottom and then drains away via a short hose that runs to somewhere underneath the car.
If the drain outlet or hose gets blocked (by leaves for example), it can cause the box to fill with water to the point where it can leak out in to the passenger area.

Hope this helps you find the problem.

The sound of water swishing about under the hood - sometimes the water actually comes through the side of the glove box. I think the water is not draining from the area below the windscreen - should this...

You can run your garden hose onto your windshield and see if it drains from both fenders (close to the doors). If the water isn't pooling under the wiper-blades then it is probably a clogged drain inside the blower box or air inside your heater-core (could be caused by a leak and-or low coolant.

Everytime it rains really hard rain gets in the car. There is a 2 or 3 inches in the passenger side floor board.

I have the same problem with my 91' 318. Water is coming in from the outside air intake at the base of the front windshield, under the black vent covers. If the basin fills up, water enters the vent system throught the outside air intake. Solution: there is a drain line at the fire wall, easily accessible between the firewall and engine block. It drains water from the basin. It becomes clogged with dirt, and prevents water from draining. However, after further inspection of mine I noticed that during periods of HEAVY rain, even a clean drain line is inadequate to drain that volume of water and the same happens. See attached link. Good Luck
