I do not think you need an Einstein to tell you that you are leaking brake fluid somewhere at a terrific rate and immediate hands on attention is needed. There is no "stop fluid leak" button hidden somewhere on the car which some anonymous stranger could tell you about. A mechanic needs to look at it and fix it before an accident and/or injury occurs.

You need to completely inspect your brakes to find the leak. It could be the master cylinder, a brake line, a leaking connection, a leaking piston on a caliper, or a leaking wheel cylinder. All of these are fairly obvious as they will either be wet, soaked, or dripping brake fluid.

Hi. Which model? On the earlier models, the park brake light is also the brake fluid light. If the fluid is at min then the light comes on when the fluid sloshes around the resevoir. Topping up the fluid solves this.

Break light coming on dash. Goes off and on. Is it safe to drive? What do I check for under the hood? and where?

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. Please allow us to assist you.

We are sorry that you are having issues with your Toyota.

What you are describing, the brake light illuminating on and off may be due to s low brake fluid condition in the brake master cylinder reservoir.

There is a sensor in the master cylinder that monitors the quantity of the brake fluid present. As the brakes wear, the fluid level drops proportionately.

What you can do:
Open the hood, and closely examine the fluid level in the plastic reservoir on the brake master cylinder. It is located at the engine side of the firewall, pretty much in line with your turn signal switch. Look at the side of the cylinder reservoir. There will be a "MAX" line, and a "MIN" line.
The Max is the proper fill level.

If the fluid level is close to the Min line, you probably need some front brake pads replaced.
This indicates a low fluid condition in the reservoir.

We would not suggest 'topping off' the fluid, just to extinguish the light. When you do get your brake pads replaced, the extra fluid will be forced out of the top of the reservoir, and the brake fluid will get on the paint under your hood. Brake fluid will damage your paint.

Suggestion: Get the front brake pads checked, replace them if they are worn.

Brake failure urgent , abs light, low battery

So many lame responses...I went through this same experience and can tell you in my case it was the alternator. All of the warning lights such as the ABS light, airbag light, the warning about the brakes are all because the alternator is not providing the DC voltage all of the car's sophisticated electronics need to correctly monitor these subsystems' status. Mine left me high and dry by the side of Interstate 5 needing a tow. The low battery warning was off and on for about an hour before all of the other warning lights came on, and then about 5 minutes later every needle on the dash went to zero and the car died. After sitting waiting for the tow, it did start up again, but we got it towed to a dealer (thank god it got us within 8 miles of a dealer! the first warnings started when we were in the sticks) who diagnosed it as an alternator. $1200 and two days later and all is well again.

Fill brake fluid

As long as the system has never been left open you can add Dot 3 fluid to the reservoir on the driver side to the fill mark, there is a low mark light that comes on when it gets low. It most likely is not leaking, the brakes have worn down so you will need to fill it again I would recommend having the brakes inspected so that you don't damage the drums or rotors on the car from wear. it will cost about $70.00 per wheel to have the rotors and drums turned and replaced pads or shoes turned and you may need wheel bearing packing as well but dought it they are supposed to last the lifetime of the car. hope this helps.

Message Centre Light

Not what light you are referring to. Hard to picture it. does sound like a brake system warning. Be sure to check the brake fluid reservoir, it may be low on fluid.
