For what you are saying, for me ,first I check the pedal brake switch.Underneat the dash, where the brake pedal is located you are going to see the switch, probably only needs to be adjust, take it off and see if it works manualy, then put it back and adjust it whit the pedal,if not try whit a new one.

Why does parking brake stay on?

jiggle the handle to make sure that the mechanical part of the parking brake system has been completely relaxed and that there is no tension on the cables or levers. If the light is still on, see if the vehicle moves without any drag. This can be done by moving the vehicle in a forward direction and then putting it in neutral. If the vehicle rolls very freely, then there may be a problem with the parking brake light switch and not with the parking brake mechanism itself. If you feel a pull, there is a problem with the parking brake mechanism.

My suv won't shift gears what can i do?

if the shifter is moving then it is probably your trans. but if the shifter is not moving from the park possition (if it is an automatic) check to see if brake lights are coming on if not check fuse for brake lights,it also controls your shift lock.try turning key to possition before lights come on dash board and moving shifter into nuetral pos. then start car and put into gear give that a try, if it does the shift lock isn`t working.

Brake problem light on in dash after i used parking brake

It sounds like either you did not get the parking brake handle all the way down or the switch is stuck. If the switch sticks, sometimes it will release if you hold the button in and move the parking brake handle up and down rapidly a couple of times. If this does not work, then you will need to disassemble the center console to get to the switch and repair it.
The parking brake indicator switch is located at the base of the parking brake lever mechanism on the right side.

The brake light warning BRAKE (I) is on, and there is a grinding noise, like the emergency brake is engaged. Especially, the brakes seem to engage in reverse. Could this be the emergency brakes, or is a...

Sounds like the parking brake is hanging up- it's been set and won't release. Pull the handle, can you feel an increasing tension through its travel or does it just move with an even resistance and then stop hard?

If the case is the second, then the parking brake is hung up. If the handle feels like it's working properly then there may be either foreign matter in one or both rear brakes or one or both have parts that have failed- a spring, for instance, on a rear brake shoe. It would just rub going forward but would set hard backing up.

Volkswagon Jetta, Brake warning light stays on.

Just for giggles... inspect the brake pads. The light is designed to come on when your brake pads are getting thin as well as low fluid level and emergency brake use.

When I start the car an exclamation point comes on and stays on while i'm driving. The car is only 3 months old. I think it has something to do with the brakes, but cannot find my owner's manual.

When did it start doing this, was it after you set the parking brake? If so set the parking break and release it, making sure that the handle or pedal return to their proper possition, also because the car is new you will have to clear the code you can do this yourself, by removing the negative battery terminal and waiting 5 minutes, or you can visit your local napa or autozone, they will use their scan tool to clear the light, they can also verify if the brakes are the cause, and if they are not they can tell you what the cause is (free of charge)

Emergency Brake does not work

You handle should pull a cable, you need to see if the cable is moving with the handle, at both ends. (At the rear by the brakes also) Remove whatever covers the handle to see what is moving, or isn't....start here!

My gear shift is stuck and will not move from park to reverse. I had backed out the car and turned it off. when I went to move the car, my gear shift will not move out of the park position.

do the brake lights work? the system has a lock out that keeps you from moving out of park unless the brake circuit is activated, hence no brake lights no park lock out release, if the brk lights do work u most have a stuck or defective park lock out solenoid.

No brake lights and can,t get out of park after car is started

sounds like the PARK / BRAKE interlock solenoid is faulty. Located by the brake pedal. Electically will not allow driver to move shift handle out of PARK unless brake pedal is depressed, Brake light switch is near it
