same but 1996 mustang gt. Need to know what precautions to take. Am concerned that when I remove top nuts and bolts strut will come flying out?

Did you every find out if a special tool is needed? I tryed to loosen the top nut of the strut in the engine compartment and it just spins the entire strut. There is a cut on the top that looks like it needs a special tool but a flathead doesn't work. Should I just unscrew the surrounding nuts instead of the strut nut on top?

Your car have struts. The difference is shock is single unit and strut is nomination of shock and spring in one. To replace the strut you need special tool to compress the spring and reliese pressure from the strut.

Your car has struts. The strut cartridges are about $80.00/ea and require some special tools. You have to take the whole assembly out of the vehicle and then using a special set of tools, compress the spring that is attached to the strut. Once the front struts have been replaced an alignment is needed. depending on labor rates in your area, figure about 2 hrs. for the strut change and then what ever an alignment costs. I think about $400.00 is in the ballpark.

Do I need special tools for replace front shocks? wrenches etc I have

the only tool would be a spring compressor to remove the strut once out off car.you will need it to compress the spring to release tension then remove the top nut and slide strut out.

Shocks

Struts have big springs around them and they need to be compressed to change the strut. These compressed spring store a large amount of energy and can be very dangerous when handled improperly. This requires special tools and skills. Also after changing struts a wheel alignment is necessary. Unless you are a very experienced do it yourselfer changing struts is probably not something you should try. Take it to a shop.

Does a 95 mustang have shocks or struts and how hard are they to chenge can you DIY it

struts in the front, shocks in the rear. struts take what are called cartridges, they require special tools to replace, shocks are just simple hand tools and very easy to replace.

You can pull the shock out from the top but you need special tools. The easiest way for a novice to do it is to pull the strut assembly out of the car, then compress the spring and remove the strut.

Replace front shock absorbers

My answer is not going to help you because not only do you need specialized equipment, but you will need special experience to perform this job.

You would be required to completely remove the entire front strut assembly from the car. It has to be safety set up on jacks. Once you have the strut assembly out of the car, special spring clamps are needed to compress the heavy spring that is part of the strut. These require very special clamps that compress the springs. If this is not done right, it can conceivably kill a person.

Once the spring has been removed, the strut it self must be removed from the strut housing using an impact wrench.

Once both sides are changed, the car must be realigned in the front end, otherwise the car will not steer or track properly.

Over all, this is a major job. These are not shock absorbers, as you would know them, but are called McPherson struts.
