check the speedometer drive and gear, if good, then check the speedometer cable for turning at the instrument cluster it could be a binding cable or broken cable. if this is good then the speedometer head is bad.

My front wipers and my speedometer are not working. I had a guy check the fuses (because I'm useless with these things) and they were all fine. Any ideas?

Wipers: if the fuse and relay are good, then you're motor is shot. Replace the motor.
Speedometer: These are simply mechanical (if not digital). If not digital, have you're friend (or you) check the input port where the speedometer goes into the transmission. It may have popped loose; if it is not loose here, it may be loose beind the dash - if mechanical, remove your cluster (where speedomoter and that are at) and make sure it's pushed in and locked into position. It could be that it is stripped (from wear) at either point, in which case, will need replaced.
If it is digital; try resetting the computer by disconnecting the Positive terminal on the battery. Wait about 10 seconds and reconnect, tighten; then start car, and drive to see if it is working.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

My speedometer,Tach, Gas guage, temp guage, windows all lost.

That smoke came from some wires that shorted and melted. Take the car immediately to a shop and fix the wiring loom, it can burst into flames at any minute now.

Speedometer just quite working

Your speedometer-cable is broken.
You could replace it by disconnecting it from the transaxle, and also from the back of the speedometer itself. (disconnect the battery before you do this).
You will need to remove the instrument cluster to be able to get to the speedometer-cable at the back the speedometer.

My speedometer on our 1993 Cadillac Allante only works about 15% of the time. Digital cluster dash set up. Any ideas on what the problem is.......? Ziproser@aol.com Ray!

The Speed sensor found near the transmission was replaced. The part is not expensive, however the labor time & effort needed getting to and from the sensors location is the most difficult part of this solution. The digital speedometer seems to be working just fine now.

You should have a speedometer cable that runs from the back of the trani, thru the fire-wall, and into the back oh the gauge cluster.

1993 vw passat speedo cable

Hi. Haynes says "either unscrew the collar and disconnect the drive cable or disconnect the wiring plug from ther speedometer sender" - I guess depending whether you have a mechanical or electrical speedo system.
If these suggestions do help you solve the problem, please give my reply a rating to help others judge my knowledge / guessing skills.
If they do not, please hold off on the rating and add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further. Cheers, D
