for a vacuum leak spray around with wd 40 the engine will speed up if a leak is found , remove the fan belt and spin the pulley replace if noisy , a fan belt will often make a clicking noise , start the motor with the belts off to check.

Noisy fan belt


with a noisy belt its caused by a worn belt,belt not tight enough,a pulley in poor condition or grease/oil on the belt.check the condition of the belt,make sure the belt is tight enough.if it has an auto belt tensioner it may not be any good and need replacing.if the noisy belt doesn`t use an auto tensioner then the belt will need tightening.if its grease/oil then the belt will need to be replaced and the pulley`s cleaned off.

Things You'll Need
3/8-inch drive breaker bar
Metric sockets
Serpentine belt

1 Open the hood and inspect the flat surface on top of the plastic fan shroud for the belt routing diagram. Follow the diagram instructions to route the new belt.

2 Locate the serpentine belt self-adjusting tensioner on the front of the engine block. The tensioner has a pulley on the bottom of the tensioner arm, which the belt travels under. The tensioner can only be rotated from the bolt that secures the pulley to the tensioner arm.

3 Rotate the tensioner in a clockwise motion with a metric socket and the breaker bar to loosen the tension from the belt. Then, pull the belt off the top of the tensioner pulley. Release the tensioner pulley and pull the breaker bar off the pulley bolt.

4 Pull the belt out of the accessory pulleys. Then, slide the belt around each fan blade and out of the engine bay. Rotate each fan blade to the top side of the engine to get the belt around each fan blade.

5 Match both the new belt and the old belt together to make sure that the new belt is the correct size. Then, route the new belt around each fan blade and around the crankshaft pulley. The crankshaft pulley is the big pulley at the very bottom of the engine.

6 Follow the routing directions from the belt routing diagram to install the new belt around the other accessory pulleys. Once the belt has been routed around all of the pulleys, look over the belt and make sure that it is secure inside all of the pulleys.

7 Crank the 1998 Dodge Caravan and let the motor run for about 15 seconds. This will finish seating the ridges of the new belt into the grooves of each accessory pulley.

8 Shut the motor off and close the hood.

the belt is not adjustable, it has a spring loaded automatic tensioner pulley, what is the problem? is it noisy? if so you have a problem with engine pulley alignment, the belt is worn out/stretched or the automatic tensioner is defective

Engine noisy when idling


It could be faulty fan belts, pour some water while the engine is idling into the belt and observe if the noise has lessened. In such case switchoff engine use some wax or chalk to rub into the belt. this may be a relief for some time.
further it can be fault with the idling pulley, the water pump bearing also can make a noise at lower RPM.

You don't have to be a Brainiac to realize that a properly operating water pump is key to your engine's survival. Shaft leaks or a wobbly, loose and/or noisy hub indicate that a replacement is needed. Similar woes can also plague fan clutches, where excessive fore/aft play or simple non-operation are replacement indicators. Both units keep operating temperatures under control and prevent boiling fluids from blowing through cylinder head gaskets2_bing.gif.

A properly operating water pump is key to your engine's survival.
Most applications find the water pump mounted on the front of the engine, with a drive pulley attached to the pump hub. Either a V-belt or a serpentine belt usually drives the pulley. If so fitted, the fan clutch is mounted to the pulley with bolts through its flange. These instructions cover vehicles with conventional (i.e., front-to-rear-oriented) engines. Front-wheel-drive vehicles can be a tricky proposition because the engine is often mounted sideways, making belt access trickier and occasionally requiring removal of the timing chain. If this is your situation, assess your skills and have a professional mechanic do the job if needed.

Troublkeshoot possible noisy idler pulleys, if they are OK, remove the plastic cobers & check for a noisy timing belt tensioner pulley. Water pumps rarely "whistle"; they grind. But, if you see any evidence of leakage at the weep hole on the water pump impeller shaft, replace the pump regardless. Might as well replace the timing belt whilst you are there, too.

Engine noisy


Look for water pump, fan belts, steering belt, AC belts and pulleys. These are common causes of these strange noises which come on and off. Also check all the mechanical nuts, bolts, screws are tightened and not rattled.
