SOURCE: Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crank sensor is on the front of your engine behind the harmonic balancer. You will need a balancer puller for a 3.8 and a crank sensor alignment tool to do this lob.

Check your alternator see if you have a drop in voltage on your tack,then it is the problem.I too was a victim of high price tune up and still had a problem with a misfire.and cover your coil pack with a piece of rubber water run of onto your power pack .Another thing is to use a silicone spray on all wires.

SOURCE: What is the correct spark plug gap for a 301

I looked under the hood at the factory sticker, (which is still readable) and it said it gaps at 0.60. So, that is what I did and everything turned out fine. And I do not believe in paying or charging anyone for this kind of information.

97 Pontiac Firebird V6 Not Starting

The fact that it starts occassionally suggest that the problem is an unreliable spark or a fuel issue.
Here's a list of things that might solve your problem;
Check the battery, if it's weak your engine won't roll fast enough and your spark will be weak. Take it to the auto parts store and have it checked, most stores will do it for free.
If you're using old gas that could be the whole problem.
Check all the ignition wires, a loose connection or bad wire is all it would take.
Check all the ignition parts, worn or dirty parts can cause your spark to miss or fire at the wrong time or place.
Check the spark plugs and wires, fouled or mis-gapped plugs or bad wires can cause misfires and oily wires can cause your spark to go almost anywhere.
Check the choke, if it's not operating correctly it can throw your air/fuel mixture way off.
I know this is a lot of stuff to check, I tried to be thorough but I know I left out the most expensive fixes, Stator, Coil, Distributor, ect...
I hope this helps, if so, I'd be curious to know what the problem was.

The Firing Order is 1-6-5-4-3-2
When you take a wire off of the spark plug of a running engine, there is supposed to be an arc.

Remove and examine the spark plugs. See what condition they're in. It may be way past time for their replacement. Also check the spark plug wires. These are often neglected, and break down after time.
