The Engine Control Computer is located: Under hood, passenger side, upper firewall, mounted in corner

Maybe, the ECC or ECM is bad if it won't communicate with your scanner.

If the anti theft system is integral and installed by the manufacturer, in this case BMW, then it's usually not deactivatable. I think they do this because it's a security feature and they don't tell the public about how to deactivate because that would be counter to having a good security or anti theft system.

I would check with the dealer and ask further questions, and maybe ask if the battery changeing company had a power backup inserted in the cigarette lighter so that memory wouldn't be lost in the computer and radio.

I thought that in the original question it said that the OBD II scanner wasn't communicating with the computer. That indicates to me that there's a problem there, possibly with the computer.

I looked up changing a starter, where the battery has to be disconnected and it says:

NOTE: When the battery is disconnected, the radio code, on-board computer and clock settings will be lost. The radio code should be obtained before disconnecting the battery or radio. Once the battery has been reconnected, the radio will not function unless the code is keyed in.

    ---
Obviously, you're having more of an ignition problem than a starter problem, but I would check with the dealer service department for BMW to see if they have any ideas as to why the car's ignition system wouldn't work after changing a battery., since changing a battery is a common scenario.

I looked on the electrical schematic and it says the anti theft module is made by Alpine.
Also, I noticed the ECM and the Anti Theft Module have a lot of connections to each other, meaning that I don't think just disconnecting the antitheft module from the system would be wise.

I have a 1996 BMW 318TI and when I turn ignition, the engine dosen't turn, but when i put a remote starter the engine turns, but no spark fire from spark. I need a solution to fix this quick!

Does the key have a alarm on it if it does youll need to replace the battery in the key. When the key is put in the transponder sends a signal to give spark and it does.then it starts. If you say the key doesnt have a alarm try this when the key is turn to the ACC position do you hear the pump. now if you crank it with the remote does the pump turn on? If yes you can do this go to the crank sensor pull on the harness(crank sensor has a tendency to get loose) does the crank move if it does youll need to tighten it up with the proper gap. if it doest solve it do this. close the door with the battery at a proper charge put the key in the door unlock it get in put the key in ignition now does it crank. If no you have a alarm problem.

security module in the trunk ???? There is no security module in the trunk . What light's come on by them self ? Park lamps , headlamps , brake lamps ,turn signals etc.... The module for anti-theft is under the right hand side of the dash . The remote keyless entry module is located in the trunk. Is this the part you hear clicking in ?
Door Lock Control Processor, Electronic NOTE: The electronic door lock control system will not function when the ignition switch is in the RUN or ACC position.
The electronic door lock control processor:
  • is located on the LH side of the luggage compartment.
  • contains a radio receiver that receives a signal from the keyless entry remote transmitter (15K601) through electronic door lock control processor antenna, and sends the appropriate command to the power door locks, the horn relay, the indicator flasher, or the anti-theft warning system.

Changed coil and distributor cap, still my engine has no spark

Here are 2 things to check. With the distributor cap off crank the engine. Does the rotor turn? If it's not turning you may have a broken timing chain. If your timing chain is ok then the problem may be the ignition module. This is usually located at the base of the distributor and it will have several wires running into it. The ignition module converts the DC battery voltage into an AC voltage that the ignition coil transforms up to a much higher voltage that will be sent out to the spark plugs through the distributor. I hope this helps you out.

Keyless remote

Disconnect the battery from your car (negative cable only) overnight. Make sure you have your radio reset code before doing so.

Then reconnect after 10 hours, and make sure you have remote handy as alarm may go off. Then if that doesnt fix it, go to driver door, then insert master key, pull up on handle first all the way and hold it. Then turn the key slowly all the way so the doors unlock and continue turning the key. This will reset the central locking system as yours may have gotton stuck. then remove key let go of handle, open door and try to lock and unlock doors from switch inside car.

Then try remote. It should work, this is what the dealer will do and charge you about $350...if it doesnt work order a new remote b/c yours may have become damaged by liquid or dropping?

Have a great day,

Thanks,

Mark
