I have a power steering leak that is normally minor, but when I turn my wheel all the way to the right or the left (like when I am parallel parking) it will leak more (I see where it leaked on the street after I get out) and start smoking. This started in late December, and I have to add fluid one or twice every month. Other than that, the car drives fine and gets great gas mileage for its age.

Maybe related: In December, I took my car in for its yearly inspection. The steering wheel was bouncing a little (something that had happened once before, and I remedied it by adding more power steering fluid). They told me they needed flush the steering system and add new fluid in order for it to pass inspection. This cost me $65, and my car drove fine for maybe three weeks, but then I had to start adding more fluid once or twice a month and noticed the smoking whenever I parallel park (which is not very often).

Thank you for your previous answer about the oil. What causes power steering to jerk when making a turn?

jerking can be a seal in the steering rack has gone the the pressure is building up on the opposite side. this would push the steering in the opposite way to how you want to turn the vehicle. it would require the steering rack to be replaced or repaired at a repair shop, sometimes it just as cheaper to just replace the rack, . sme repair shop can repair the rack but you would need to remove it or the charge will cost more if they have to remove it.

I need to check my power steering fluid and cant figure out where it is located.

power steering fluid is located closest to the drivers seating part of the engine. as a matter of fact, every other fluids in the car is housed in a larger container engine oils, antifreeze, water wipers, transmission all of which are located away from drivers seating area of the engine. Open the engine of car, take some time to observe that each comparment chamber have written demarkations of type of fluid intakes.

Where do you check the transmission fluid?

The vehicle should only have an engine oil compartment, radiation compartment for antifreeze/ water, power steering fliuds, a water wiper blade spray dispenser compartment, and finally the transmittion fliud container area all situted within the engine entrapment area. Usually, opening the engine for the first time would require observing the fliud compartments that are identifyable from the remaining engine chambers. Observing closely on the fliud container should have written descriptions of what is expected within compartment. For example, the water fliud containers for wiper blades would usually have written lables as wiper blade fliud container, radiantion container would usually have the antifreeze demarkation logos visibly observable when engine is opened. Rely by elimination methods to ascertain the transmission fliud compartment. For example, once antifreze container, wiper water container, engine oild container, power steering fliud containers have been identified, the most like only remaining in the engine would be the transmition fliud compartment. Alternately, every fliud container within the vehicle engine is situated at separate areas. For example, the only fliud container closest to the transmittion chamber is the engine oil compartment. The vehicles usually require more engine oil than transmission fliud. Between both fliud containers, the smallest chamber for fliud oil is usually for transmission perposes in the absence of hydraulic fliud compartments with newer vehicles.

Yeah, I hate that, like having a u shaped chamber filled with jello as your connection to the steering. Even it breeds anticipatory steering, all equates to added stress to operation of vehicle.

Inspect every steering component and repair as necessary. Then get an alignment.

Be sure to inspect the steering box mounts on the frame, that area flexes and eventuyally cracks.....

Then look at steering box adjustment.

I have wanted to install rack and pinion systems on some vehicles I ahave owned. Keep after it.

How do i repair a power steering leak in the main ram of a 1991 C

There is no repair commonly to repair the rack and pinion. The only thing you can do is replace the unit and make sure it gets aligned properly afterward so it does not wear out either the outside or inside of the tires, cause the steering wheel to be off, or steering issues.

Check out the 2 lines that run from your power steering pump. With the engine running try moving them, and look for fluid leaking around the end of the hoses, you will probally find one of them leaking at the fitting. Of course be careful with the engine running, do not have any rags or anything in your hands around a running engine.
