Question about 1999 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

My friend said that i needed a new O2 chip for my car, but at the shop they said all my sensors were acting up. They plugged their diagnostics machine in and it reset my computer fixing the problem; however my car's acting up again. Any ideas on the problem?

What is plugged into your vehicles diagnostic connector under the dash,is called a scanner.
It is not a computer and does not fix anything. It looks inside your vehicles computer, to see what it is doing.

O2 Sensor, not a chip. It is in exhaust pipe or converter, and tells the computer how much oxygen is in the exhaust gases,so the engine can adjust the correct fuel mixture.

The scanner does how every clear your check lights on the dash, they will come back, if you have a system malfuntion.
You can have issues,as you do,with no check light on or no stored codes.

Need to continue to diagnose your problem

it could be fuel filter, may just need new plug. wires, I've even seem an O2 Sensor make a car act funny. here's what I suggest. Drive it up to you local parts store they will put it on their diagnostic meter for free. The diagnostic with show codes that the parts store can translate into words then you'll have a better idea of what to get instead of throwing money at it with the hope it will fix it. Hop it helps

What to do if the code for bad o2 sensor keeps goin off after replaced?

There is not anything you can do without automotive
knowledge

You need a repair shop

If parts are changed purely because of a code, then your
not diagnosing why the malfunction code was set in the first
place & you need experience, test equipment & usually diagnostic
charts to follow or refresh your thought process

When you said had something replaced, I surely hope that was
not by a repair shop, because they are in business to solve your
problems, not guess or fail at the solution

Lexus 2001 RX300 - What is it when the Trac Off, VSC & Check Engine lights are on at the same time while driving? Thanks!

I have no mechanical experience and my Lexus 2001 Off truck, vsc, and check engine lights came on while driving. After a research on the net. I paid 10.00 for a diagnosis and came up with the code P1135 A/F Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1). I went to Autozone store in San Diego and purchase the sensor, 170.00 dollars. Went to a mechanic, lift the car up, pull the sensor out under the car and put the new one. The 3 lights went off. No more faulty codes. Labor 25.00 dollars. Except for the lifting of the car, the change of the sensor is like changing a spark plug. It was no difficult task and it took 15 minutes. 7/31/2010

I've had my Jeep in the shop 3 times over the past

an o2 sensor would not make your vehicle do this the o2 sensor may sending an error code do to the fuel being to rich or to lean while it's passing by.this sounds more like a bad map sensor ot mass air flow sensor try pulling them out and cleaning them

96 Dodge Neon O2 sensor Ckt No Activity bank 1 sensor 1----how do I replace the sensor, will that correct a problem with the check engine light?

That would correct the problem, the O2 sensor is on the exhaust manifold or on the exhaust manifold down pipe. If you go to Auto Zone, they will have the O2 sensor you need and also the loaner tool you may need to remove the O2 sensor. Auto Zone also can give you the step by step instructions to replacing the O2 sensor in about 30 min. Once you located the O2 sensor, disconnect the wire harness and use the O2 sensor socket to remove the sensor from the exhaust. It's like removing a spark plug, to install the new O2 sensor is just to follow the same procedure in revers to the removal. Good luck.

About a jeep grand cherokee

There is a possibility that your security system is at fault, but I think it more likely that there is more at play. Most of the time I run into the wrong or a new key causing the issue. Crankshaft position sensor is more likely. Also the camshaft position sensor is a possibility. There are a few others. If you have the knowledge and some test equipment, it is possible to narrow them down. There is a possibility that a scan tool will be necessary.
If you are uncomfortable with diagnostic testing I suggest having a reputable shop look at the Jeep.
