Question about 2002 Ford ZX2

2 Answers

I have a 2002 Escort ZX2. I used to get 24 miles to the gallon now I get 18. I have been reading about oxygen sensors. The car runs fine just the mileage problem. Could the sensors be the problem or could something else contribute?

It dose have something to do with fuel econemy But there two many other varribules to say this the majic bullit I would start with and oid faistion tune up plugs wires cap rotor air fitter fuel filter check tire pressure Then redo your millage test and see where your at i;ll bet it goes up If you start getting MIL codes then the sensor come into play but you are saying its bascily is running pretty good and you don;t have codes or flashing lights hope this helps

It could be alot of things, it could be a o2 sensor but not likely. i wold look at doing a tune-up, and maybe clean ur mass air flow sensor. plus maybe check for any codes in the computer. u can do this just by taing it 2 a autozone or any auto shop.

I have an '02 automatic DOHC ZX2 and I recently had to replace the Mass Air Flow sensor in the air filter housing. It was around $120 for the part and you need a special recessed star tip head to remove the screws. One site said that maybe I could have just exposed the sensor and cleaned it because sometimes aftermarket airfilters that are saturated in oil dirty the sensor. I did put a re-usable air filter in so I didn't have to keep buying the one time use ones. I wonder if that was my problem, and do aftermarket filter have oil in them? Anyhow, my car seems to work fine now, but it may be too early to tell..I have slightly bad gas mileage compared to what I should get, so I hope this helps with that too.

Does this car have an interference motor?

ford escort/ focus engine 2.0 l spi sohc 1997-2004 has been identified as an intereference engine and that means very likely valve to piston damage
( auto data timing belt information )
note-- up to 2002 year Ford has not recommended a timing belt interval for changing
Ford has however recommended a replacement every 120.000 miles using the service history as a guide
however good professional trade practice recommends every 60.000 miles ( 100.00klms) and the replacement work should include replacement of the crank and cam shaft seals and idler pulleys involved ( the biggest destroyer of belts is oil)
recommended labor time is 2 hours
if the belt has broken then head removal and valve work will add up to 5 hours to that time

This code is set when the oxygen sensor is reading a lean condition....I would make sure you dont have any vacuum leaks. If thats ok I would change the oxygen sensor.

98 ford escort se P0171 error code

Jeff Lindsey I have a 98 ford escort zx2 that had that same CEL (Check Engine Light) come one... Here is what it ended up being with mine I would go to your local parts store like auto zone or Napa Auto parts and purchase the Oxygen sensor, an oxygen sensor socket and the location of the sensor that you need to replace if you have the 2.0L DOHC engine like I have is on the front of the engine located just below the manifold cover you have to remove the fan cover from the radiator, remove the intake manifold cover its a little aluminum shield and then you will see the oxygen sensor

I strongly suggest to do this when the car is not hot. Just be careful to not burn yourself on the cover.

Its a very easy task to do. I did it on mine.

parts cost about 60 dollars or something like that socket was like 7 dollars and a normal 3/8 drive ratchet and a normal socket, also maybe a wrench set if you would like.

hope that helps.

I need to know where the oxygen sensors are in a 2002 ford escort zx2 and how to change them.

All you have to do to find any O2 Sensor is look
at the exhaust pipes in the area of the exhaust
converter.
The sensors screw in like a big spark plug and have
a wire connector going to them

They only get replaced at 100,000 miles or when they
fail. NOT WHEN YOU GET A CODE

Trying to replace both oxygen sensors having a hard time gettin to them tryin to figure out the best and easiest way to get to and remove them and what tool would be best on a 2002 ford escort zx2

The "Before" CAT O2 sensor is easy, just remove the exhaust heat shield and you should have enough space to get to it. The "After" CAT O2 Sensor is a bit harder; I found the easiest way to do that is to remove the right wheel and it will expose an opening that you can reach through to break it loose.

HI, ITS A GOOD CAR A FORD ESCORT 2001 110000 MILES? I WANT TO BUY IT. THANKS.

I have a 1998 ZX2 with 193,000 original miles. For four years it has had a turbo on it and I run 13's in the 1/4 mile at the local drag strip. So far, the engine is holding up just fine. Now, the transmission is a different story. But, if you aren't beating the car up every week at the drag strip or trying to destroy a set tires with a smokey burn-out, you won't have to worry about the transmission. A very good resource for Escorts is www.teamzx2.com

2002 ford escort zx2 camshaft sensor fit a 99 zx2?

Yes, All the years of the ZX2 utilize the same engine. 1998-2003 are all the same except for ECU programing and the MAF wiring. You should not have a problem.
