Question about 2001 Land Rover Discovery Series II

Open Question

I have got Discovery 2 td5 manual transmission 2001 made. With the RPM reaching 2200 in any gear or in neutral gear, engine just goes back to idle with the feeling it is starving for fuel. (doesnt care where the throttle pedal is). What could be wrong? some say Waste Gate Modulator needs to be changed. Some says ECU connectors must be contaminated with the oil from fuel injector harness.

SOURCE: I have a 1995 240sx.

Hey,

Ive done this and if you want the car to be reliable and powerful, i suggest forged Internals, and an aftermarket ecu, because it a waste of time modifying with a oem ecu, something like a stinger ecu, made here is australia, you will need bov with the engine and make sure you dont overload the engine for the first 3000 km 1400 miles, as you will blow it up. and more questions for me email Beauknight@gmail.com

Cheers

SOURCE: how to adjust rocker shaft on discovery td5

There are adjustment screws on the rockets according to RAVE.
The procedure is as follows:
1) Rotate the engine clockwise until No 1 injector lobe is at full lift.
2) Rotate rocker adjusting screw clockwise until the injector plunger is felt to bottom out.
3) Rotate rocket adjusting screw anti-clockwise one complete turn to give plunger the required bump clearance and tighten rocker arm adjusting screw locknut to 16Nm. Ensure the screw does not turn as the locknut is tightened.
4) Carry out the procedure for the remaining 4 rocker arms.
5) After completion of rocker arm adjustment slowly rotate engine clockwise 2 complete turns by hand to ensure that no injectors are bottoming out on their plungers.

lost engine power, or transmission slips????
which is it?
the engine rpm tells you if the engine is weak or transmission slips.
2.0 liter , DOHC I4, J20 engine.
which transmission, my guess A/T box. (sounds like?) sure..
test one
1: in drive. pointed in safe direction, say a field or ?
2: parked, hand brake and foot brake held hard and fast.
3: race engine to wide open throttle for 1 to 3 seconds.
and lift right foot. after noting RPM. quckly.
4: rpm below 2200 rpm is a weak engine , if the engine spools
wildly up to 3500 rpm or more, the transmission is bad. (slips)
this is called the stall test. (in the FSM)
2,300 - 2,600 r/min. for H25/J20 engine
stall test passes. so does the transmission reach 4th gear.
1,2,3,4? yes/ .no.
yes, the its not the transmission.
if engine power lacks in any gear, that is the engine. weak.

this post is about the engine power, (my answer)
will you change 100 more parts guessing?
why do that?, any shop can diagnose it for a fraction of your guessing.

if the trans dont slip
  1. over heating? the engine?
  2. never done a tuneup this decade?> really?
  3. low fuel pressure?
  4. low engine compression.?
  5. Bad MAF sensors or just dirty?
  6. check engine light on running?, why ignore that, scan it.
  7. weak spark , see #2 and 6
  8. leaking or clogged injectors. or stuck on, for 2 reasons.
  9. Intake vacuum air leaks>?

both the engine and transmissions are complex
as is the vast number of tests to do. based on previous tests and logic.
do you want to test or gue$$?

High idle unless driving in gear, but if clutch is pushed in or car is in neutral rpm goes up to 2900

run fault codes to check for accelerator position sensor problems . Check for vacuum leaks. If cable accelerator then check that the return spring on the end of the cable is attached and not missing.

RPM is over 400 rpm higher than it should be with no gas pedal.

Could be several things.. I would suggest replace the neutral safety switch, all O2 sensors and fuel and air filters, PVC valve and if needed plugs n wires..
The issue could also be a bad throttle body.. Should be a good idea to get it hooked up to a diagnostic machine - get the codes and then you will know more of what you are dealing with..

Have a great day !!

Do you remember by chance speed vs RPM before & after work done? for example : before was 2000 RPM @ 60 MPH. Now 2200 RPM @ 60MPH ? May be coincidence, and transmission not shifting to overdrive or high gear.

did you check for vacuum leaks? vacuum leak will cause a higher rpm , and some use vacuum to shift transmission,
