Sounds like the pads are worn out and grinding on the rotors. You need to pull the front tires off and look. If they are, replace the pads and rotors.

Nico, return to the mechanic and tell them of your problem if rear left is still grinding or right, have them repair and make it right.

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

Grinding front end when I brake on my 01 lincoln navigator

This sounds like a definite case of worn brake pads. They might have previously fitted pads with soft linings for better stopping power and if your truck is automatic the pads wear down faster on automatics than manual.Ask them to fit pads with harder linings if they have available, but you will have to machine those brake disc's to re-smoothen them or fir new ones(A better proposition) as they are most probably scoured from metal against metal and fitting new pads onto scoured disc's will not only make your brake drums run very hot, but also wear down pads faster than normal and cause poorer braking response.Or maybe that was the problem from the beginning, scoured disks from before a year ago! Check it out good luck.

For a couple of weeks on my 2000 chevy blazer the breaks were acting funny. Whenever I would come to a stop they would grind a lttle but not all the time. When I would park in a space it would do it to but...

First thing with brakes is to check the lining thickness. You can usually see the fronts through the wheel, or look underneath. If you have drum brakes in the back there may be a rubber inspection plug.

But if linings are ok, another risk is wheel bearings. You would then feel it as a vibration in pedal, and through steering wheel if a front bearing.

With the light, have the ABS code read with a ODBCII module. Autozone can do this for free.

The grinding sound was the metal part of the worn out pads chewing your rotors up. If the sound has stopped, then something is completely gone, probably what was left of the pads. You will most likely need new rotors, Advise you don't drive the car until the brakes are repaired.

Backing up grinds, go forward grinds but stops grinding at 10mph

Check your brake pads and rotors, if the grinding sound is more obvious when you brake, the pads are gone and it's iron against iron.

Brakes were grinding and now have stopped

Depending on how far you drive to work, If you can already see grooves in your rotors it is doubtful if yu will do more damage than has already been done! However, you are taking a chance if the brake light has been activated.
