Question about GMC Safari

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Safari van that has started to stall out with out any warning. It will start after it has stalled however you don't know where and when it will stall and getting more frequent. Checked the cap, rotor, wire's and replaced the fuel filter. Also checked the vaccum. All look good. The fuel pump was replaced about a year a go. I've checked for engine error codes and no error codes are listed or show up.

There will be fault codes if the correct scanner is used
there is a protocol required for several manufacturers ECM units which require a correct protocol in the scanner before the codes are revealed

Check or replace your ECM power relay. It may be gong out. It's located in the fuse/relay center under the hood.

More than likely it's the distributor. They have a tendency to build up corrosion and rust and have personally went through the same situation three weeks ago on a suburban. Check to see if you are getting spark from the distributor first. Have the ecm in the distributor checked at Oriellys for free. It's under the rotor and has two 8mm head bolts with wires plugged in at each end.

Does it start right back up after it stalls? make sure all conections are tight at fuel pump, sounds like it could be loosing ground at pump, or hot lead is loosing its connection at pump. Also fuel pump relay could be getting hot and quits working.

Need fuel pressure regulator info 1998 safari van . . . does that model even have one? Van starts in the morning then quits . . . have to restart 2 to 3 times before gettng going . . . can't give it...

The fuel pressure regulator on that Vortec engine is under the upper intake plenum, on the back side of the central fuel injector. It is held on with a slide clip.

The van will start and run for about 2 seconds and quit i changed fuel pump, filter, distubitor, cam and crank sensors and module

Gm vehicles have been known to have faulty anti theft security systems. One of the symtoms of this is when your vehicle starts for 1-5 seconds and then stalls. A good way to know if this is the problem is when you see a light on the dash that says SECURITY. If you see this light flashing or on solid, this explains the van not starting. I.ll give you advice.Because I don.t know the type of your engine please change Hall sensor/crankshaft position sensor/ and ignition amplifier.Everything will be O.K. If I know the engine type I.ll cancel one of above mentionated items.

Engine stalling

I assume the code (32) you mention is from a diagnostic readout tool.

If you do not have the original info that came with the readout, you may have to go to the tool manufacturer's website.

The entry P0032 on my Centech OBD II yields this:

"HO2S Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1"

That doesn't make muchsense to me in view of your symptoms but maybe it will help.

97 GMC Safari Cargo: engine turns but will not start

Safari's tend to have problems with the rotor button on the distributer. Your's may be going bad. At first the van will stall as you described, due to a jarring of the motor, ie: a bump. etc., and then it will restart.

After a while the rotor button will fail completely.

I have had this same problem with two safar's and this is the solution that I have found.
