The fact that all your electrics disappeared including all dashboard lights indicates a faulty battery/connection.
Check the battery terminals for cleanliness and tightness. Check the black earth lead for cleanliness and tightness where it connects to the engine block/bodywork. Try adding an extra black battery lead - connect it to a suitable point on the engine or bodywork
Check the idle rpm (efi around 900 rpm ) carby around 750-800rpm. Very few alternators charge under 750 rpm as it requires 14 volts to charge the battery and at low revs the alternator will be producing around 11.5-12 volts. Check tension and condition of drive belt.
Voltage regulator. Thats what I would check first. Newer cars they Re built on to the alternator. I'd replace that first. Remember alleys disconnect battery when doing Nythong with electrical. If you don't and you hook up that regulator , it will fry it again!
If you wanna do a little more research google vw forum. Join a couple forums and start asking questions. Make specific forums havethousands if people who own the same cars as u, and moat likely many people on there have experienced the same issues u are, give it a shot.
Was the battery dead flat when jump starting ? This may have caused damage to electronic components due to a sudden electrical surge when removing the jumper leads .(especially if the engine was running )
Usually the first to be hit is the alternator . Just put a volt meter across the battery and rev the engine to about 2500rpm for 20seconds or so . The voltage should climb to about 14.5 volts . If the system is not charging that is where your problem will be , likely a new voltage regulator which is internal to the alternator will be needed .
I am also wondering why the battery went flat in the first place , did you leave the lights on ? Perhaps also test your battery and make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight .
First make sure the terminal and posts are clean and greased.
Then make sure the alternator belt is tight.
The type of battery makes no difference as long as it fits.
What matters is whether or not the alternator is putting out 13.5 volts or higher, in order to keep the battery at 12.5 volts. Put a voltmeter on the battery and rev the engine.
