I was told the spark plug gap was supposed to be 42

spark plugs are not as critical as in the older point controlled systems
the gap increased the resistance to the spark to jump and so gave a hotter spark when it occurred ( same as putting a button in the copper wired lead to burn oil on the plug)
as modern vehicles use a much higher voltage ( early 16.000 volts ,late 60.000 volts ) the the plug gap went from .025" to .050" for a better spark front to ignite the mixture
the correct gap for your vehicle can be obtained from plug catalogs, parts dealers , service shops
it is more important to use the correct HT leads as recommended by the manufacturer as there are variations of internal resistance in the carbon track in the lead that will affect the spark

What is spark plug gap for 2000 ford focus lynx ghia 1.6l gas?

It really depends on the spark plug being used. But if you stick to the origninal spark plug NGK TR5A-10 it is supposed to be gapped a 1.0 mm since Ford has issued an in house service directive to reduce the gap from 1.3 mm (original) to 1.0 mm (present) 0.03936996

This 1999 grand am uses platinum sparkplugs and should not be regaped, the plugs are to be installed as them come, just take a look at the gap to make sure no one dropped them and closed the gap completly but otherwise install them as they come good day.
