Either the fluid and filter needs changed or the transmission is low on transmission fluid.

It is not effecting reverse because the clutches in the forward gears are more worn. And takes a little more pressure.

Sounds like you have an electronic problem with the transmission; the best thing to do would be to connect the proper test equipment and test all the related electronics. I'll believe it most likely a bad throttle position sensor, which tell the transmission how hard you are pressing the gas, if this signal is misreading, then the transmission will do funny things, believing the lying sensor.

Other possibilities are the solenoids and torque converter.

!992 nissan stanza standard trans fluid

If your referring to the manual transmission where you do the shifting. Your going to be using gear lube, not to be confused with transmission fluid. Which is red in color, they are not interchangeable transmission fluid is only for automatic transmissions. Gear lube is much heavier in weight, you want to get a gear lube 80-90 weight this lube is perferred for your vehicle

changing gear wont hurt your car unless its thumping into gear, you should all ways put your foot brake on anyhow when changing into reverse or drive to stop this thumping but going into drive then reverse realy wont hurt it in any way

How do i replace the neutral safety switch? are online schematics available?

The neutral safety switch is part of the transmission shift lever assembly, located on the transmission housing. It just unbolts with two screws and unplugs, installation in reverse order.
