Whining noise on Volvo 240 when in neural and park

A common cause of a whining or buzzing type noise when not in gear (neutral and park) is a WORN PUMP in the transmission. How many miles are on the car??

A noisy pump is just noisy and won't cause a breakdown until it becomes MUCH louder. If the noise is not that loud at this point, just keep driving it for now, and chalk it up to normal wear & tear. But DOOO make sure your transmission fluid is topped off. The amount of fluid between the LOW and FULL marks is about one pint. DON'T overfill OR allow it to get below the LOW mark. Transmissions are VERY fluid-level-sensitive.

This jag will start in any gear including reverse when the engine starts the Bendix does not go in starter continues to whine until taken out of gear rather put into gear

this statement is hard to understand as it is not logical
the engine will start in any gear--ok --- problem in the neutral/park switch
when the engine starts the bendix does not go in starter but continues to whine --exactly what do you mean --does the starter motor stay engaged in the ring gear after the engine starts or does it come out of engagement with the ring gear but continue to spin
as there is no connection between the gear selection and the starter motor can you explain the last part of tour statement

What would cause my transmission to whine, but only in gear, not in neutral or park?

Time for a trans rebuilt

What your hearing is mostly pump noise, from
fine debris in the pump valve bores or worn bores

2001 is way over due to come apart

Worn out from heat & wear & seldom seen a fluid change

Funny shifting is worn & hardened rubber parts, partially
clogged solenoids, dirty valve body, the usual, given the years
& mileage on it

WHINING NOISE IN PARK GETS LOADER WITH MORE RPM

Does it make this noise in neutral? if so this is not the trans. it sounds like the engine.

Engine making whining noise

There are a couple of things to check. If your power steering pump is low on fluid, or a bad bearing is in the Alternator, they will whine. The PCV valve or any hole in the Vacuum lines will whine as RPM is increased. Even having the Air filter box not fully seated will make a whining noise.

Now both automatic and manual transmissions can whine as RPM is increased. Check fluid for each.

Serpetine belt and pulleys-can make noise.

Sometimes you can shift into neutral at any speed and the engine rpm will drop almost instantly as the car rolls at speed. If the problem disappears as soon as the rpm drops, then an engine part probably is the reason.

Transmission whining

have you checked the transmissions fluid level, need to check it with the car running in park or neutral, on level ground. If its in neutral make sure the parking brakes are applied and the tires chucked to secure the vehicle and prevent rolling. Locate the dip stick for the transmission pull it out whipe it clean, then re insert it into the dip stick tube until it is fully seated, pull the dip stick out and look at the markings it should read more than half on the hot side.

Whining from engine when in gear

Just a thought- remove the oil filler cap when the whine is present - (this checks if PCV valve is faulty, causing high crankcase vacuum, which in turn causes a whistling/whine noise as air leaks past engine oil seals). Worth a check.

Try listening with a short piece of hose pipe to locate immediate area/source of noise.

97 4runner making a low whirring noise/whine from engine.

Could be a possible break down of the plug wires. Seems that I remember hearing if your plug wires are breaking down inside and if its up against the motor you can hear something that sounds like interference in your radio. Just a thought, might want to check it out.

Continuous "whine" @ 1500 RPM only; and jerks/2001 Lincoln LS

Run the car from the top of a hill and let it coast at your whining speed. Put it in Neutral, does the whine disappear?
If not its in the drivetrain (wheels, driveshafts, tranny)
Very unlikely to be the timing belt. If it appears at a fixed speed then its drivetrain, if it whines at fixed revs its the engine.
Most likey the transmission I fear....Tires will also make loud whining noise too though...
