sounds like the compressor is locked up,just unplug the wire at the ac compresor,it will need fixed in summer ,$$$,but it will be ok with no ac. The pump runs on defrost to dry the air in order to aid in defrosting.That's why it does that on defrost.The sparks are from the clutch trying to turn a frozen pump. Just unplug the pump.
