There is an idle control motor on the throttle body. If you pull the air tube off of the throttle body and look to the rear of the throttle butterflies you will see the passage for the air to flow through to the idle air control motor. You should also see the tip of the pintle of the IAC. Use a screw driver and carefully push/pry the pintle back into the throttle body.

If the vehicle starts and idles than remove the IAC (2 torx screws hold it to the throttle body) and clean it with some carb spray. Clean the bore that it sits in as well with carb spray.

If the pintle on the IAC looks like it has wear marks in it replace it.

This is a fairly common problem with the dodge trucks.

My 2002 dodge durango with 4.7 dies and starts right back up

Our 2001 Durango would start and die immediately unless I really got on the gas and kept it revved up. It also would start right back up.) Once it warmed up, it would then idle normally. The fix was to get a new battery. The old one was (apparently) not holding the voltage high enough to make the electronics and sensors happy when the vehicle was first started.

Multiple cylinder misfires cause engine to die out unless gas pedal is pressed. Will not idle

the fuel smell is from unburnt fuel in the cylinders not firing , i'd have to start with reading the OBD codes to help narrow down the component/s at fault but at a guess i'd think the ign coils are at fault but the OBD will pinpoint the issue

Loud ticking noise when first staring, engine stalls sometimes when starting it unless I hold the gas pedal down

The TPS would be what I would do had that problem once myself solved the problem. as for the ticking noise sounds like a lifter is bleeding down as long as the noise goes away you will be ok. But may I suggest that if you are going to keep the vehicle for awhile longer you might want to have a set of lifters put in it.

Pound ticking noise when my 99 durango starts goes away after the engine warms up

The ticking noise could be a faulty hydrulic valve lifter. When last was the oil & filter changed, it coul be that the oil is thick and not going through to the lifters and when it warms up the oil is thin. It could be that the engine is need of an overhaul as 148.000 miles is 238.182 Kilometers and that is a hi milage.

hey that sounds familiar!have you checked your idle control sensor? let me tell you 1st you crank it cold, you have to keep your foot on the gas pedal until it warms up.but then when you come up to red light quick stop, the engine dies or wants to stop? sometimes it starts fine? but when it does, after running for a few minutes,it idles up and down? when it's warm after driving 15miles or so,you shut it off and try a restart, and the engine starts, but idles up and down? all of the above are signs of a bad idle control sensor.the part costs about $20.00 u.s. 2bolts removal 1 PLUG IN REMOVAL you may be able to do it yourself.have an autozone or advance autoparts store employee show you where it's located.you would be shocked at how many great people there are left in the world! i'm answering your question for free at midnight from the u.s. think i'm bored? no. just love helping people like you! thank you so much!

My 98 dodge wouldn"t idle and only run if i kept the trottle right down . it was the catalytic converter
plugged . It comes with y-pipe so price it out . I got quotes from 275.00 to 1580.00 for parts . I removed complete exhaust system and replaced it in about 3 hours and $425.00 . It runs great and fuel milage went way up . approx 200 kms per tank . hope this helps .

Your alternator is not recharging the battery. You need to check the connections on the alternator. You should have 12V on the "FIELD" terminal on the alternator. If not, find out why. Check for a blown ALT fuse.

Also, check the voltage on the battery when the engine is running. It should be more than 12V if the charging system is working correctly.
