Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Am

My 1997 pontiac grand am with a 2.4 will not start by the key but will start by "jumping" the solenoid.What could it be/

Replace the ignition switch. It is located under the dash, mounted to the steering column.

check battery make sure it is 12.6 volts.have vechicle jump start if it starts battery probably weak if jump start dont work either starter solenoid or starter faulty or vechicle in theft security mode.besure to turn off radio first to keep from locking out radio when you disconnect negative battery cable to check battery and starter at the auto parts store .

Im looking for my transmission solenoid on my 1997 pontiac grand am. I was told it was in the pan but I dont see it there are two plates with gasket is it in there.


There are several solenoids in the side pan, not the oil pan where the filter is located. There are a couple of shift solenoids and the TCC (torque converter clutch) solenoid inside the side pan.

Will not crank battery good current to trans selector good fuses good starts with jump wire to solenoid still no current to solenoid when key is in start pos. replaced ign sw no change


you never mentioned if you have power from the switch, check for power in and out of switch with volt ohm meter, then trace wiring to starter

well does the key go in does it turn to the start pos? if the dash dost power up its because the switch is bad if it will power up but not start it can be becuse of the resitor chip depends on what is going on if you cant get power its becuse of the switch

1999 grand am gt how to touch wires on solenoid to start


go from the POSITIVE on the starter to the solenoid, have key in run position as to ensure powe, this will get you home.

Key will not turn


sometimes you can jiggle steering column or spray a little lubricant to dislodge key

Grand Prix wont start


Try checking the starter solenoid wires.Make sure the wire hasnt come loose and the battery to solenoid cable is tight.
