Question about 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

I have Replaced my Transmission Pan Gasket Bought from the Autopart store, including Filter, O-ring replaced from Filter as well, I put a little Silicone so the Gasket wouldnt move, made sure the old Gasket was removed and pan was cleaned to be smooth for installing the pan back in the tranny, however I noticed it was still leaking after a few hours. replaced the gasket again with more Silicone and made sure it wrapped around the pan. It didnt leak, drove it to work next day and came home, next morning saw a big puddle of fluid. What could cause this?

Front and rear seals, tailpiece gasket, pump gasket, transmission lines, and dipstick tube. also if you over filled it, it will blow out the top air vent.

You will need to buy a "TRANSMISSION FILTER KIT," which will include a new transmission filter, uptake gasket, and pan gasket for your transmission. (They run about $20 or less on eBay.) Once you have done that, you will need to hoist the vehicle, and CAREFULLY remove the transmission pan by loosening one bolt a little at a time without removing them, and breaking the old gasket free (hopefully without making too much of a mess of transmission fluid). About half of the transmission fluid (about a gallon and a half) will be in the pan (the rest in the torque converter). It is usually sufficient to replace just the amount of oil in the pan (otherwise you need to remove the torque converter inspection plug on the bell housing and crank the engine to expel the seal, draining the other half of the fluid, then replace the bell housing seal).
Once you have drained away the transmission fluid in the pan, CLEAN THE PAN THOROUGHLY WITH A SHOP TOWEL, and carefully remove the bolts that secure the filter to the transmission valve body. (As I recall it is four 10mm bolts... but not sure on your year model).
Remove the filter, and remove any remnants of gasket on the uptake chamber between the filter and the valve body. MAKE SURE YOU REPLACE THE SMALL GASKET AT THE TOP OF THE FILTER WITH A NEW ONE, OTHERWISE THE TRANSMISSION WILL SLIP DURING THE 1-2 SHIFT DUE TO AIR BEING SUCKED-IN (been there).
Check for correct torque specifications for the filter mounting bolts before tightening them and DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE RETAINING BOLTS.
Once you have replaced the filter, and your pan is clean, scrape away all remnants of gasket material from the mounting surfaces, and position the new filter. (This is easier if you use a tiny amount of silicone RTV to hold the gasket in place and keep it aligned with the pan mounting holes).
Replace the pan, tighten the bolts to spec, re-fill the transmission with the appropriate amount of NEW ATF, then test.

I have a 2002 mercury cougar V6 automatic and I know what the problem is. My car needs to have the transmission pan taken out and replaced along with the gasket. My dad and I want to fix it ourselves but...


easy job. Just loosen pan bolts enough to let the fluid start draining from one end. As more drains, keep loosening the pan bolts till you can remove pan and finish draining what's left in the pan. At this time, most people would also change the transmission filter body: it's right on bottom of trans. when the pan is removed, easily accesible. Parts stores sell a kit with new filter and pan gasket included. Anyway, now you are ready to install new pan gasket. Clean gasket mating surfaces as clean as you possibly can. let no oil or fluid get back on there. Place gasket on (most don't recommend adding sealant or gasket compound). Put pan on with all bolts fingertight. Then starting from center outward, start tightening them down to torque specs-it'd be pretty light torque, like around 20 ft-lbs-might want to ask a ford mech. what torque specs are. When done, refill ****** and check for leaks after running car.

How to change the transmission fluid?


It's a mess to do it yourself but not all that difficult. First thing you need is a BIG drain pan. I use an old plastic storage box, like the kind that you store sweaters in and put under your bed. When you loosen the bolts on the pan, the oil goes everywhere... I loosen all the bolts just a bit and then try to let the oil drain out on one end of the pan rather than all over the place. I wear disposible gloves but they are slippery when the oil is on them. WEAR OLD CLOTHES. Once the oil is drained, remove all the bolts and remove the pan. You'll find crud in the bottom of the pan so clean it up spotless. Clean any gasket material off the pan and transmission surface. Next, remove the transmission oil filter. It should look like the one you bought at the Parts Store. They pull out CAREFULLY with a wiggle/turn. More oil down your arm will follow...
There will be a new gasket in the filter kit. This is tricky to remove. Again, BE CAREFUL. Do NOT damage the area where the gasket sits in. It is aluminum and very soft. Patience, patience...I use a little hook and a thin screwdrive to remove mine. Put in the new filter, new gasket on the oil pan and bolt it back up. Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern and DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. I like the oil pan gaskets they sell at NAPA. They have a metal ring feature that prevents over tightening the pan bolts and distorting the gasket material. Most recommend NO gasket sealer. Ask at the Parts Store. Also ask how much transmission fluid to buy.
After that, start adding transmission oil. I put in one quart LESS than they recommend to start. You don't want to overfill it. Start it up, let it warm up and check the fluid level while running on a level surface. Keep adding a pint or so (if needed) to get to the FULL mark on the dipstick.
On this old of a vehicle, I would run some SEAFOAM transmission additive BEFORE I changed the fluid. Drive it a couple of hundred miles then change it.
Like I said it isn't that difficult but a mess. Stay away from the places that offer a "Transmission Flush". All they do is drop a siphon hose down the dipstick tube and **** out the fluid. They don't change the filter and all the crud is left in the pan. A waste of money.

Transmission a mechanic said a hose rotted and the transmission died?? how can i fix it without replacing the tranny


Although this is may not work depending on transmission wear and tear, you will need to do this if you plan to replace transmission any way. Replace the damaged hose. Next I would get a transmission filter kit. This is a simple kit that is sold at part stores and includes filter and gasket. You will need to buy transmission fluid and a gasket sealant. Jack up the vehicle, drain the transmission fluid by loosening the transmission pan, if you need help finding this check the gasket shape you purchased. The pan will most likely be stuck a little from the previous gasket sealant. Carefully pry it apart with a flat head screwdriver or pry bar, transmission fluid will go when pan is dropped, so, be careful in placement of pan and how much you loosen all bolts. when pan is dropped check for metal shavings inside. If you have none things are looking good. Remove filter most oftenly attached with phillips head screws. Check this filter for debris and metal. If you do not spot anything serious by now, replace using new filter. Ensure you have a clean surface for the new gasket after removal of old gasket. Once you have this done, add a thin layer of sealant to pan and place gasket on top of it. Apply another thin layer of sealant to the other side of gasket and reinstall to transmission using correct tightening sequence and torque. These bolts do not need to be overly tight. Most leaks happen from overtightening bolts to pan. Usually a lil over hand tight is fine, but, check with you parts store. Add fluids to proper level and then you will be able to test the transmission out. I know it sounds like alot, but, it cheaper than buying a new transmission if you don't have to.

make sure it's not leaking from the shift solenoid pack in front of the transmission. the gasket leak all the times.
if every thing is good then you may have a bent in the oil pan

Cant find transmission flter on my car to replace it


you have to remove the transmission fluid pan-it is not an external filter
first remove the transmission drain plug and then remove the pan-you can then remove the filter and transmission pan gasket

Leaking fluid


Only so many places these trans 41 TE can leak on the vans. Lines on top, speed sensors(input, output)one is below the lines the other is to right of the lines. Dipstick tube, trans solenoid gasket, Oil pan & extension gasket. Wipe off & clean area very well. Lines leaking, check clamps first before replacing. Speed sensor leaking replace o ring, Dipstick tube replace o ring, Trans solenoid replace gasket, Extension plate replace gasket If the pan is leaking you change the trans filter & put a gasket on the pan. The book says RTV on the pan, but FelPro make a gasket for the pan $6.99. Use a Chrysler trans filter!!!! O rings for sensors, tube around $3 each, trans solenoid gasket $3, extension gasket $10, Filter $11 + gasket $7 & 4qts trans fluid if doing the filter or extension gasket.

Putting on a transmission filter kit


to replace filter jack up and support vehicle if has drain plug remove and drain or loosen and remove all bolts but keep the two corner bolts at the front loose but not out and one in the middle opposite side at back have big pan under wider than trans pan pry at single bolt to release gasket when released remove single bolt let drain than remove other bolts clean pan and gasket put aside grab filter and pull down make sure o ring is removed not stuck up in tube replace filter /o ring reassemble and tighten bolts in crisscross pattern

How to change trans. fluid and filter in a 2000 mitsu. mirage 1.8?


first you need to get a pair of safety glasses to protect eyes from cleaner. then you need 12.6 pts or 6.5 to 7 quarts of transmission fluid+ filter.you also need a drain pan to catch transmission fluid.you need a 3/8 ratchette and socket set.you need some paper towel and maybe1 or 2 cans of brake cleaner.now you want to safely raise and support car on jack stands.make sure you are on solid level ground.put drain pan under transmission to catch fluid.take ratchette wrench start removing tranny pan front and side bolts.loosen rear bolts one turn let the pan drain.when all tranny fluid drain out of pan. then remove pan clean it good with brake cleaner.remove all traces of old gasket. from pan then dry with paper towel..then you remove tranny filter.becareful not to damage anythingthen put in your new tranny filter then.wipe and carefully clean around gasket area on transmission with paper towel.make sure there is no traces of olds gasket material on tranny area where tranny pan gasket seals.now get new gasket align its with tranny pan holes.you might want to buy a gasket adhesive.just put on some to hold gasket in place when you install it to transmission.besure to clean all tranny pan bolts real good with brake cleaner. then dry them off real good.because some transmission you have to put a little rtv sealant on bolts.to keep them from leaking.now once you get bolt holesand gasket on transmission pan line up.all tranny pans bolts with a little rtv silicone on threads and on bolts head where they meet the pan.then you transmission pan in place.make sure gasket and bolt holes line up.when putting bolts in dont tighten them until you get them all in first.when all bolts are in.then you tighten criss cross dont over tighten them. torque them to 90 inch pounds .when all is done .starting putting tranny fluid in.and check for leaks.start the engine up let it idle for few minutes if you see no leaks lower car down to ground.then move transmission gear selector through each range and back to park.make sure tranny fluid level correct before driving car. WARNING IF YOUR CAR DONT HAVE THE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK.AND HAVE A FILL CAP INSTEAD THE DEALERSHIP HAS TO CHANGE FLUID.BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO RAISE CAR ON LIFT TO CHECK FLUID LEVEL.BECAUSE CAR HAS TO BE RAISE UP LEVEL THEN A DRIP PLUG IS MOVED TO CHECK TRANNY FLUID LEVEL.

first you need to buy transmission fluid new filter and new gasket.you need 11.4 pints of transmision fluid.raise front of vechicle.set parking brake.block both back wheels.besure support vechicle weight with jack stands. get a drain pan.if your transmission pan dont have a drain plug.loosen rear pan bolts a few turns.remove the front and side transmission pan bolts. let fluid drain.remove tranny pan. then clean old gasket material from transmission and pan carefully.dont scratch or damage surface.clean old tranny bolts using brake cleaner or buy new tranny bolts.you have to put a tiny film of rtv silicone on tranny bolts so they wont leak.carefully remove old tranny filter and put on new filter.clean all grease grim away from tranny pan it should be **** and span because.you might need a little gasket adhesive to hold gasket in place while putting pan back on transmission.to line up bolt holes.loosely put all bolts in you have to move pan a little to get holes line up.when all is finish put tranny fluid back in.besure you put 11.4 pints back in that about 6.5 quarts. make sure tranny fluid level is right before driving vechicle.l
