Question about Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

2000 Dakota R/T....Normal driving, revs to about 3000 rpm before shifting from first to second then makes the other shifts real fast.......If you floor it in first, it will never shift and hits rev limiter......If you take off real easy and let off the accelerator a bit, it will shift out of first.......If you put the gear selector in 2nd, it will never shift out of first.....all this started overnight ....This is a 1-owner truck with no modifications and trans has not been worked on........65000 mi.......will downshift into passing gear just fine......its just the 1-2 shift problem......last fluid change was at 25000 mi thanks!

You can try some tranX in it. This stuff works great. Also there is a shift adjustment in the cable. Sounds like a sticking valve though.

95 GMC Jimmy two wheel dr the battery light will come on during shifting. Volts will go down and lights go dim. After it shifts gear it would go back to normal. Will repeat during shift gears or rpms...

like I see the problem ,the most common is belt not tight enough or alternator or battery
with a voltmeter check the battery voltage more then 13 volts. test battery with a load test

95 dodge dakota having hard time shifting.

Try a tranny service change a place that changes the filter the pan gasket and fluid not some of these quick places that just drain a couple quarts out of the tranny lines and thats it that wont help but a complete tranny service should help.

Hard shift from 1st to 2nd, then 2nd to 3rd.

Dont think they changed it yet but the older chrysler units had a rod that went from the throttle linkage to the transmission (maybe a cable now)...If you lengthen the rod it will increase shift pressure and give you an earlier shift.

I have a 99 jeep grand cherokee ltd, 4.0 L, 6cyl, auto, 4wd, 87000 miles. My problem is that on the first start of the day and when the engine is cold, the transmission wont shift from 2nd to 3rd until...

I'd begin by having the trans fluid changed and making sure there isn't an excessive amount of debris in the pan (there is always some but should not be obviously a lot) You may have a slight varnish buildup inside that becomes less sticky as the internal temp rises.

With normal acceleration the 1st to second shift point should be around 2500-3000 rpm. Most of your shifts under moderate acceleration will take place at this same point or when there a light load on the transmission. Under hard acceleration the RPMs will climp higher due to increased power needs and the computer will shift when less power is needed or the RPMs climb to an unsafe speed say5000-6000rpms (depending on where yours redlines). Also going up a steep hill will raise the RPMs higher and goind down a hill will cause a faster shift at lower RPMs. These can always be altered by an individual owner by adjusting shift points, using performance parts and if you have problems (low tranny fluid/trans issues). Your trans RPMS are fine and will vary depening on how your foot accelerates. The shift pattern should be the same every time you drive slow/medium/fast/, look for changes in those patterns you will also catch a problem early.
