Question about Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

My '93 grand cherokee 6cyl 4.0 would not start. It will start when i boost the battery. i have a brand new battery. i removed the battery and tested it and i got 12 volts at the battery terminals. When it is running i read about 12 volts on the car battery gauge. I disconnected the cables to the battery and it stays on runnining. I also got 14 volts at the alternator terminals. I''ve noticed that when i turned of the engine and try to restart the jeep, the battery status guage pointer will stay inside the red hash of low voltage reading, There is where i think the problem is. What is restricting voltage?.

Find the blown fuse or bad ASD relay - that'll get it going. Outside chance you might have a wiring problem, ground or something, but the PCM turns that ASD relay on, which supplies the injectors and the alternator field with power.

If you have 12 volts at the battery and only 7 volts at the relay socket, you've got voltage drop problems between the positive side of the battery and the relay socket. Try temporarily running a new wire to the common relay terminal. If you can get get 12 volts at the relay's common terminal and if the relay is good, it should start.

93 jeep grand cherokee laredo wont start unless i jump the starter

Check the cables and cable connections to the battery to make sure they are tight and free of corrosion. Test the battery and make sure it doesn't have a bad or dead cell in it which would cause it to not have sufficient amperage to start the motor.

Will not start . thought battery was weak because it seemed like starter was dragging 2 days before not starting. now when i turn key all i hear is relay clicking inside fuse box

Battery and charging system needs to be tested. If the alternator quit you can only run so long on the battery untill it runs out of juice. Boost the truck and let it run for a couple minutes ( remove booster cables ) then remove the negative cable from battery.. if it keeps running the charging system is fine and the battery is to blame.

On the back of the case you should see a round tag. The numbers you are looking for are right on there.

1993 jeep grand cherokee 4wd 6cyl.

Got a relay in the power distribution center? (black box just behind the battery, towards the firewall) I can't remember if you have one (funny because I've got two outside but too cold to go look) Anyhow, everything in there is labled on cover inside.
Other stuff to look at: check for cable connections at starter & block for clean & secure. check neutral safety switch, check ign switch. Make sure battery connections are clean on inside, not just on outside!
