Question about Chevrolet Monte Carlo

1 Answer

This problem has been going on for a couple of months. If my car sits idle for two or three days it won't start. I have a new battery (second new battery in a year). My mechanic thinks that the radio is draining power from the battery. He said maybe a new radio would work. Have you heard of this problem before ? Do you think it is the radio ? Please help. It's a 2001 Chevy Monty Carlo with 81K miles. It runs great when it doesn't have this problem.

Hi! How are you doing? Actually yes I heard of it and it did happened to me a long time ago. Major wirings of the radio goes to:

a. battery
b. ignition column
c. ground
d. power antenna

There surely is a grounded wiring somewhere that needs to be looked at by an auto electrician. Replacing the radio is not a solution. Even if you replace the radio but the wirings aren't fixed the problem will still occur for the problem will be on the wiring harness of the car not on the radio's wiring. Hope this shed some light. Have a good one and thank you for using FixYa!

Why is this happening

Before you go any further, have the battery checked. If there is an internal problem, it will create all kinds of problems like this.

My 95 Pathfinder has sat idle for a couple months and now it won't start.

letting a vehicle sit idle for months is not good !!! now you need to do some work, so get out your check book ! replace both air & fuel filters, replace spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap & rotor, add fresh fuel & fuel injector cleaner to tank @ same time. why are you going from accessory to run, that doesn't make any sense, stop it, please ! now get to work, good luck !

Sounds like you have bad gas. Gas goes bad after a couple months of sitting. I've gone through plenty of other options when trying to figure out this same problem, and it turned out to be the easiest problem of having old gas. Try running fresh gas straight into the fuel pump and see if it turns over then.

Something is draining the battery. Remove the positive terminal on the battery, then touch it back on it. If it arcs back then you have a constant draw. Try removing fuses one by one until you don't get an arc. Then at least you now know what is drawing the battery down. That is the component that you have a problem with. ( You will always get a slight draw from the radio because of the memory) If it is a heavy arc, then you have something wrong with the radio.

new cars have a lot of things running in the back ground, you can hook and AMP meter on the battery and see how much it pulls just sitting there, then one by one unplug fuses and see if maybe a relay has welded its self closed and drawing more current then it should in the off postion. if possible hook a battery tender to your car and plug it in, it will keep a small amount of current going to the battery and should keep the battery charged.
