You need to have the fault code scanned to determine the reason for the light being on. Take it to AutoZone, they will scan it for free and give you the code information. If the light is on steady (not blinking), you can drive it safely for some time. A blinking check engine light means a significant problem is occurring and the catalytic converter can be damaged if driven any further.

What does the emmisions light mean when it is o

This can be caused by many things, as simple as bad gas cap seal or not installed tight enough (common); cracked or broken hose, usually under the hood where things get hot and the rubber hoses get hard and break, to a flooded charcoal canister caused by "topping up" fuel after automatic shut off, or the purge valve failing. The best shops have a smoke machine that you hook up to the system and it will leak smoke from the broken hose. Start by carefully inspecting the gas cap, then check for bad hoses.

2000 honda accord ex with code p0505

For a 2000 Honda Accord LX, the check engine code P1456 simply means that your gas cap is off or isn't tight enough. It wont go off immediately. It make take up to a weak for the check engine light to turn off once the gas cap is tightened enough.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My 2004 dodge neon had it's check engine light come on the codes that came up are P442 and P456 what do they stand for?

they are for evaperative emmisions leaks.usually its a loose gas cap that causes these codes they are small leak codes.check gas cap, give it a couple of turns more to be sure its tight.
the car has to make 3 consecutive trips that detect no leaks before light will turn off.each trip has to start with a cold engine gas level between 15% to 85% of full.
or clear codes with code reader and drive car as usuall. if a leak is detected twice then the light will come on again.if it does then you will need to look for cracked vapor hoses, leaking canister etc

MY ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED-WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM.

it means a fault was detected in one of your emmisions systems. a loose gas cap will turn it on along with a million other things.check to see if cap is on tight give it a couple of turns.it dont hurt it to make the clicking sound when tightening.
if it was loose it will take a while for the light to self eztinguish. it has to have 3 warm up cycles with no leaks from tank to aloww light off
other then the gas cap being loose you will have to have the code pulled at a shop and go from there

Check engine light/gas cap will not stay tight.

Yes, the gas cap will cause the Check Engine Light to come on. Will set code P0441 if I remember correctly. It should be okay to drive it. If you would like to confirm the code, take the truck to an auto parts store like Autozone and have them hook up their scan tool and read the code. If its P0441 it will probably be something like EVAP or Evaporative system leak.

Its an easy enough fix while your there too, just pick up a new gas cap or you could pick up an OEM one from the dealership.
