Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

3 Answers

2002 jeep cherokee lost power while driving, when accelorating RPM would go up but car would not go faster. Smelled rubber? burning, smoking, sometimes it would "catch" and run with RPM correctly. Started and ran fine the next day for a month until reoccuring. Now it will not fire even with starting fluid. Please help!

if you have manual transmission, your clutch is toast. If automatic tranny, your tranny needs rebuilding. May be something else wrong as well if engine will not start.

is there a way to bypass or correct security system?

  • mproney Nov 10, 2010

Is there a chance it is the PCM or CPS?

  • mproney Nov 10, 2010

can security be bypassed? how can i tell it is the automatic tranny?

  • mproney Nov 10, 2010

This engine is distributorless.is there a way to diagnose these problems without guessing? If it is a tranny problem why didn't it do this all the time? It ran fine for a month before dumping again.

Hi!!
Check the following:

  • Fuel pump Pressure,
  • Sensor connections on engine block and intake manifold,
  • Sensor connectors on transmission bell housing, some times they get loose, particularly the Park-Neutral-Position sensor.
  • The wiring harness coming from the PCM when it splits down to the transmission should be checked. There are protruding studs on the fender well and firewall that tend to rub against the harness insulation and over time get to the wires and short out.
keep me posted!!

Hi! How are you doing?. Regarding the acceleration of the car, you surely have a faulty torque converter. If the torque converter is faulty the car will stay or slip in its gear. In your position, the torque converter stays in it's gear resulting to high rpm but in low speed. You will need to replace the torque converter if that's the case. Regarding the smell, it surely is a burnt transmission fluid so replace it aswell.

Regarding the no start issue, I suspect that the distributor is faulty. If there's no electric current flowing, even if you put starting fluid it won't run for the fuel won't burn. If this is the case, you will need a distributor replacement.

Hope this helps and have a good one! Thank you for using FixYa!

If you are suspecting the PCM then it's a yes. But as a first course of action please perform the first option. If it still fails then its gonna be a bad PCM that will surely require replacement.

You may want to run a scan tool on the car to know the fault code and the fix. This can help too.

It sounds like the transmission is going out. And you have a different problem with it not starting. The not starting issue sounds like a security problem. When the security system is thinking that the vehicle is being stolen, it cuts the ignition. That is why you are not able to start it with starting fluid.

I have a 2002 4.7 jeep grand cherokee limited. It has a miss. Smokes but no code. White smoke. Oil looks perfect on dipstick. No bubbles in coolant at radiator.

Water in the gasoline, or a leaking head gasket. A leaking gasket may not show water foaming or discoloration in the oil, but level in the radiator will go down over time.

Brake light, battery light, service engine soon light on. white smoke from under the hood. area near belts loud and I smelled burning rubber. put car in park the engine shut off. What's the problem?

If your battery light came on, and you smelled burning rubber, it could be that your belt that drives the alternator, which charges your battery is broken or flipped upside down. Do not drive with the battery light on or else you will stop dead when the battery does not have enough charge in it to keep the car running. If you decide to drive and not follow my advice, then be sure all extra electrical power is off eg. radio, fan, DVD, lights etc.

Jeep no power

which engine option? that be first huh?
sounds like you need a hands one , eyes on mechanic, no?
low engine power, randomly?
gear box, which one? The A/T or the transfer case> 4wd?
is that lost engine power tranny slip or engine power loss
a hands on guy can tell that, in 1min flat. (why not do that)
the Engine light dont lie, it means there was a failure. why not
scan it> and not work blind.
smokes>?
from where? tail pipe end? or somewhere else????
white steam smoke (goes away fast and stinks of antifreeze coolant (sweet)
white burned oil. smells like burned oil and take for ever to disapate.
or black smoke, cause by way over RICH FUELING.

when power loss happens does engine RPM race way too fast.

all this a mech can determine 5min, hands on.
on the internet, may be 50 posts>?

Vehicle drive smooth then all of a sudden the wheels starting to tighten car slow down.

what makes you thing the tires/wheels tighten (felt by hand off ground?)
my guess , you meant it seems. like???
1: lost engine power?
2: transmission not up shifting?

is this a auto A/T or manual M/T tranny,
if A/T , you need to look at the engine RPM when you lose
power (acceleration on demand)

RPM rises, car dont move faster ,this is tranny slip.
RPM fails to increase, and speed, up hills. this is called lost engine power.
lost engine power can be caused by , bad spark (tuneups skipped?)
or weak fueling.
weak fueling too can be cause by skipping the fuel filter step in the tune up list.
