Question about Pontiac Grand Prix

Open Question

Hello. My 2004 Pontiac GP said "Service Traction System" followed by "Reduced Engine Power" more than a week ago. This happened after I had just gotten it out the shop for it failing to start without me giving it some gas. It has now been in the shop for 9 days and the repair person can't figure it out. A fellow GP owner is telling me its the Throttle body. Should I have the car sent to the dealer instead of this outside regular mechanic?

SOURCE: reduced power light came on

reduced power messge is not caused by oil pressure. i assume this a 3.0L v6. this engine has a electronic throttle body which is a electric motor that operates the throttle plate that takes the place of a throttle cable. in cold weather the pcv (positive crankcase venelation) system accumulates moisture that will form on the throttle plate, in cold weather the water freezes and causes throttle plate to stick. when the ecm detects any malfunction whithin the throttle control circuit it is put in to reduced power mode that limits throttle position. usually resets after ign. is cycled. there is a service bullitin to re-position pcv hose behind throttle plate to reduce moisture bulid-up on throttle plate. your saturn dealer can perform this service.

SOURCE: Service Throttle Control

It sounds like these things are all related. When the a computer sees a problem in the Electronic throttle system, it will dissable traction control, and give the reduced engine power alert because the powertrain computer does not know the value of throttle postion.
Codes will need to be scanned in the computersto begin diagnosis.

SOURCE: My 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix barely moves!!!!

Have you ever had the catalytic converter changed. Over time the pellets inside will melt together and this will make the care very very sluggish like it does not want to run. You may want to try that.

What causes the "Reduced Engine Power", "Service Stability Control" and "Traction Control" warning lights to come on?

the "Reduced Engine Power", problem causes the PCM to disable "Service Stability Control" and "Traction Control" turning on the warning lights to come on for those systems . The reduced engine power is because of a problem with the electronic throttle control system or as GM calls it TAC system . Reduced Engine Power Mode
When the PCM detects a condition with the TAC system, the PCM may enter a reduced engine power mode. Reduced engine power may cause one or more of the following conditions:
• Acceleration limiting--The PCM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however, the vehicle acceleration is limited.
• Limited throttle mode--The PCM will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however, the maximum throttle opening is limited.
• Throttle default mode--The PCM will turn OFF the throttle actuator motor and the throttle will return to the spring loaded default position.
• Forced idle mode--The PCM will perform the following actions:
- Limit engine speed to idle by positioning the TP, or by controlling the fuel and spark if the throttle is turned OFF.
- Ignore the accelerator pedal input.
• Engine shutdown mode--The PCM will disable fuel and de-energize the throttle actuator.

What does it mean when the "Reduced Engine Power", "Service Stability System" and "Traction Control" warning lights come on?

You may have to have the harness replaced. Be sure the connector innards stay dry. When they get wet the contacts will oxidize and start shorting to each other and also the oxide is an insulator causing connections to open. Good Luck, I had a water problem with a Ford Flex and even though covered under warranty since I was the second owner they would not honor it. It cost me about three grand so price things out before getting it fixed, the car may not be worth the investment.

Have the fault codes read as a reduce power message means that something is wrong either in the engine or the gear box. check oil and coolant levels and treat the message seriously as it is intending to stop costly damage

Pretty much tells you the system with the fault

Traction Control is embedded into the abs braking
system, so diagnose that using the codes you have,
same as any other obd codes you get

The Reduced Power could be another problem & it
cuts off fuel injectors to save the exhaust converter
from overheating & being ruined

SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL

a bad reading from a wheel speed sensor will cause the problem you need a scan toll to see what one is bad they also had a problem with the harness connectors so using a scan tool makes it a must

Engine power reduced, service traction

when you have the fault codes read to find the exact sensor failure or cause , have it fixed then reset the ecm as the ecm will reduce the performance(limp mode) for safety reasons

Hello and welcome. the engine reduce power waraning is the key to the other problems. this is normally a problem with the electronic throttle system. the engine control module disables the traction control system when it detects a engine problem, in your case a problem with the electronic throttle system. you shouldnt drive with this concern. this is normally covered under the vehicles 100,000 mile warranty. you need to conteact your nearest dealer for help
