Three things to check
Pull the plug that goes to the sending unit there will be 3 or 4 wires in it, use a volt /ohm meter set it to dc volts, check and if you have power going to two of the wires, this will be the pump and sending unit power. then set to the lowest ohms setting and check the other wire/wires to see if they are grounded to the frame, you will have to find a good ground on the frame. if you find a bad wire you will trace it back to the short and repair it. If these all check out good then you have to go to the instrument panel. I have had very few guages go bad, usually the most of ar the whole instrument panel goes out instead of one guage. You will have to pull the instrument panel out. Remove the bezel in front of the panel, usually two screws above the panel and the rest pops out. then four screws to remove the panel. Alot/ most of the time I find that the plug is coming out of the panel. I suggest you remove it all the way then plug it back in, do both plugs. If the plugs are mounted on the frame then all you need to do is push the panel back in place. First make sure the plugs are not loose in the frame. If they are resecure them. then recheck the fuel guage. if it is not working you will have to take the panel apart, about a half dozen screws. then you can check the guage itself for continuity. if it is bad replace it. If you need any other help with this let me know.

Why fuel gauge not working gas guage on 2009 santa fe stays on empty even with a full tank of gas. Guage fluctuates from empty to 3/4 full to empty to 1/3 full at any given time.

It could be the sending unit in the tank or the gauge on the dash. A mechanic would test the signal coming from the sending unit to verify.

Fuel gauge not working and empty lite is on

Looks like the sensor inside the gas tank is shot! It will need to be replaced. The tank needs to be removed to pull out the sensor and replace it....the empty light will work normally after that!

Just bought a 2000 honda passport, and the gas gauge does not work , is it a fuse that needs to be replaced ?

if the light works for low fuel it is not a fuse, most likely cause is a bad sending unit in the gas tank.

Gas Guage stays full for a long time

Usually a sign of a faulty sending unit in the tank. If that is the problem it would need to be replaced or repaired.
You could start at close to empty and then check the resistance of the sending unit with a VOM meter as you add fuel to the tank.

Gas guage falls and rises

This problem is causes by a defective fuel level sending unit, The sending unit is located inside the gas tank and the gas tank must be removed from the car and the fuel pump module (contains level sensor) replaced to correct the problem. This job requires a hydraulic floor jack, safety stands to hold the car in the air safely and a very good set of common hand tools plus a special tool to remove the fuel lines from the tank. Time to complete is about 4 hours on the ground.

I have a 2000 mustang and my fuel guage works fine. But 7 gallons fills it up from empty. As I drive the guage travels from full to empty just like it should. I do not have any dents in my tank.

I do not think you have any dents in your tank, nor do I think its empty when the guage indicates that it is.

It is more then likely a fuel level sending unit which is located inside of the tank. They are not fun to replace, empty the gas, drop the tank, and then replace the sensor.

Fuel gauge acting up!

There have been problems with the dash guage module that may cause this problem. Could also check the sender in the tank. If you can access the wires for the fuel sender you can check it with an ohm meter. The reading should stay relatively constant as long as fuel is not sloshing in the tank. If it is the sender, then a fuel pump module is in your future. There are aftermarket fuel modules available and many independant shops that could easily do this repair if the dealer is not inclined to help. If the sender checks out, then it could be the guage/module.

Fuel gauge doesn't register correctly

The fuel gauge sending unit is in the fuel tank in a module along with the fuel pump, and float guage. It sends an electronic signal to the fuel guage on your dash. When it becomes worn or the float may even have a leak in it, the unit sends incorrect info to your guage. The solution is to empty your fuel tank, drop it from the vehicle, remove and replace the entire module.

this is caused by one thing only, the gas guage sending unit is defective, this fuel gauge sending unit is part of the gas tank mounted fuel pump module, cost $360.00. see photo.
