Question about 2001 Kia Sportage

1 Answer

I was driving to work and the cars just died on me. When I try to crank it it would turn over. Does mean it could have "jump timed"? Also where is fuse panel on this car?

Could have jumped time or maybe a bad fuel pump. If it's easy to check the camshaft sprocket timing marks, start there. If not, I recommend a bit of standard troubleshooting first (check for sparks and fuel, then check timing marks).

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5821173-doesnt_car_start_gasoline_engines . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Hi Teresa thats ththhe sign of a battery going bad, how old is the battery? You might want to have it load tested so you can trouble shoot further, there could be more than 1 issue.

Solid red dot came on right side. Now turn key and nothing

3.7L gas or Diesel? (know what you are driving?)
jump start it , call AAA and do that.
or uses your jumper cables, buy them and keep them hidden in car at all times.
battery lugs all white with corrosion, clean them.
wiggle shifter yet.? while cranking?
try to crank it, in Neutral not park , yet?
cranking takes 20 times the current than headlights. or more diesel.
and 1000s times DING power. so means nothing.

what light the glove box oper guide tells you all lamps
book is free if lost (ask)
30 objects, which one is RED?
on my 08 the solid red (has no mark) is SKIM immobilzer light.
(its a stealth light on purpose) #20 is left. (kills fuel not cranking)

did you mean, the Charge lamp was ON, just before the ENGINE
died, lamp #10 , THAT MEANS the charge system failed.
and that cause the battery to DISCHARGE.
and then engine must die. (all cars)
charge the battery and cure #10 lamp warning true cause.
never drive and ignore warning lamps if you in fact did.

how'd I do?

2000 mercury grand marquis 4.6 Intermittent problem. 35,000. miles. Problem engine died several times wile driving. Also after car is parked from a drive will not start. Found that the fuel pump is not...

I'd have to test when problem is ongoing. When you first turn on key, no crank, you should hear the pump run for a few seconds then stop. For initial prime, the computer doesn't need rpm signal. Engine cranking, the computer needs to see rpm signal or it won't ground the fuel pump relay. W/o rpm signal, no spark at the plugs and no fuel injector pulse. I know your talking about fuel, but, when problem is ongoing, check spark and fuel injector pulse, engine cranking.
Intermittent problems are a pain, have to test when problem is ongoing.

97 mpv died while driving. getting gas / spark but know start. seems to be cranking very easily. rotor turns when trying to start. maybe jumped time? or blown head gasket. i need to check the oil. if no...

If it sounds to be cranking much faster than it did before or just an overall different sound then a good chance that the timing belt has jumped. That is unless the abnormally fast crank is due to low compression caused by washing down the cylinder walls with the fuel. If it was cranking fast or abnormal from the very beginning of this whole event then a check of the cam/crank timing would be in order.

Car won't start. Battery power seems fine. Turn the key, no cranking, lights and radio die with key in "start" position.

Hello davidoz,

Your description sounds like a bad battery. Do you have a volt meter to watch the voltage as you turn the key to start? The voltage on a good battery( meaning fully charged) should stay about 11 volts while cranking, if it drops below that suspect a bad battery.

Another possibility is that the battery is good but the alternator is not charging.

Will it start with a jump? If is does check with a volt meter the out put of the alternator it should be 13.8 volts or slightly higher.

netvan

Could it be timing belt or fuel pump

you just answered your own question, turns over fast means no compression, from what you say the timing belt gave out

this sounds like crankshaft position sensor, my Cherokee was ding same thing it ended up being crank shaft position sensor. this part costs about $50 and is easy to install.
