Turning on the AC forces the idle to rise, if it is working as designed. It may be masking the problem. How does it idle after warmed up and AC off, all accessories off? Check idle speed, idle mixture needle (if accessible-some are plugged off with anti-tamper metal seals) and do check timing if you have a rough idle. Timing could be spot on, it must be close if it runs perfect, just make sure it is within plus or minus 2 degrees of specifications at specified idle speed, and vacuum advance hose disconnected and plugged off.
Well, good luck with the old dinosaur, lol, as an owner of a '79 Datsun pickup, and now an '87 sedan (Nissan, of course!). We will run them into the sunset together!
Replace your MAF, its a little pricey around $280.00 or so but this will clear the code but make sure you have the ECM reprogrammed to perform a "learning" sequence since sometimes the code will not clear even though the vehicle will run like new. This reprogramming will most likely have to be a dealer performed procedure.
your throttle position sensor is maybe causing an overfuel,or the egr is plugged and when you rev it up,it is not burning the excess.if you leave it like that, the excess unburnt fuel will burn out your catalytic converter
Sounds like plugged up pre cats, my NA had the same problem I got a Racing Beat header that eliminated the pre cats and it went away. I've also seen them on eBay for cheaper. Either way you can't lose the stock header is like a cast iron stove attached to the engine it's heavy and massive.
Change all the filters (fuel and air). check and see if all your spark plugs are firing or just change them. if it is fuel injected make sure your injectors are working. Hope something there helps get it running good.
rx7`s should rev to 3000 when started cold then it should settle to 750 to 1000 after about 30 to 60 seconds. mine suffers a similar problem. so far I have been told various answers, mostly involving the bac valve, lambda sensor, air flow meter, etc. try starting of by adjusting the idle adjust screw (on top of the throttle body under plastic cover) this may be all it is. I have not had time to do mine. Its been fine otherwise and idles fine after a few minutes. mine is non turbo 87.
