You do not state the age of the car or the type or the size of engine or whether it is petrol or diesel. On older E class models a fault in the over voltage protection relay would cause cars to be very jerky in idle. In general on petrol models I would start with the throttle body. Remove the air ducting between the air filter cleaner and the throttle. Make sure the interior of the throttle, the throttle plate and throttle area behind the throttle plate is really clean. Ensure that all all air ducting joints and vacuum lines to the inlet plenum are free of any leaks. On some engine variants the cam sensor oil seal over time can fail allowing oil to contaminate the electrical connection. Thoroughly cleaning the socket and replacing the 'o' ring usually fixes this. On diesels (3.2 CDi etc) the EGR feed pipe from the exhaust manifold around the back of the engine to the inlet manifold can become clogged with soot. Push a frayed bit of hand brake cable through it to clean it; clamping the cable in a drill chuck can make for a very effective flexible interior wire brush around pipe pipe corners etc. Any further information you can provide as per the opening statement would help in the diagnosis

Won't idle at low speed

greetings anon.
hot and cold engine ? ill assume hot only.
but runs ok with fast right foot???? ILL ASSUME YES!
idle regulation has vast numbers of reasons for failing so ill list the physics.. only..
ill reduce this to simple

1: engine misfires so bad it can idle.
2:ISC regulator stuck closed, or fails for above.
3:EGR stuck open. and makes ISC seem bad but is not.

The ISC is and idle speed control system.
it can not raise idle if engine is running super bad
it cant do that, it can only add air.
in a servo loop system.

so a savvy mech, uses his right foot. to prove this
in 1sec flat (i call it the happy foot)
if i can raise idle easy, it's iSC messing up.
if i can't the engine runs bad.

easy no?

ever get a tuneup this decade?

A condition of warranty is usually to not only have the car serviced at the correct intervals but also to be able to provide proof of that. If you go to the dealership and ask them to fix your fan they might not ask to see the proof. You might get away with it...

In Europe, vehicle manufacturers and dealers are forced by law to honour warranties as car owners have the right to use any independent garage or workshop, though it still should be documented and proof of genuine parts being used is good politics.

If the dealer refuses there is no reason to waste the journey - you could question a mechanic about the likely cause of the trouble, ask the parts guy if they have been selling a lot of something to do with your problem.

you may have a blown fuse. check that first and if none then i would suggest taking to a pro and having a scan on it. could be a sensor.

1999 Expedition - when in idle the speedometer and RPM needles occasionally go wild... any advise_

when was the car last serviced? if recently serviced what service did the garage do? servicing the car at 20,000 km involves changing spark plugs/ clean or change air filter, fuel filter/ engine oil filter in some case it alson involves cleaning the throttle body and cleaning injectors.depends on your climate and driving condition, your car might be having a faulty airflow meter or faulty idle speed control sensor, have those two checked or cleaned then if problem still the same have your car checked by a code reader to pinpoint the problem.

That it to any parts store and they should be able to tell you what code you are having trouble with. "Genuine parts", are not going to be easy to find if you have no VW dealer around. All parts do a job or they dont. "Cheap"just really refers to price. Mike. Rate 100% and respond back please.
