My MIL light started coming on about 1wk ago, and has stayed on. It becomes shaky upon exceleration, but is not noticable once it gets going. Any ideas on what is going on and cost?

Check engine ligth comes on and stays on. The car is running a little rough now too. Both problems started this morning. We had our mechanic do a tune-up on the car about a year ago.

When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis.

Check engine light has to be scanned to see what is causing it. The problem causing it is probably stored in the car's computer. Get it scanned at autozone or a similar place, they usually do this for free. Not likely a CEL would be thrown for fluids being low.

Sounds like the injector pump is putting out too much fuel, i.e a overly rich condition. Could also be leaking causing it to be flooding while it is sitting.

EGR Valve failed, causing the MIL Lamp to come on and car to slam and ****, going up hills, that is when you have a high vacuum load on engine. May seem like a trans problem.

It sounds like the fuel/air mixture is to rich. I would not recommend trying to fix it yourself, because it will require some specially tools. However if there is anyway to drive it, go to an auto parts store and the can run a scan of your engine systems to determine exactly whats happening. good luck and please rate this

2002 Jetta MIL light comes on after start and stays on. Any idea of what this could be?

Your going to have to get your car scanned for the DTC codes. The Cars ECM has detected an issue by setting the MIL light to come on, It could be as simple as a faulty gas cap to a faulty O2 sensor, Good luck and Auto Zone scan free of charge.

You can remove the EFI fuse but if it is a ongoing problem the light will come back. If it is no an on going problem then the light will stay off. Just turn key off and under your hood on left side there is a fuse box remove the EFI fuse for about 1min then put fuse back. should make light go away unless there is an ongoing problem. this will not fix any problems just make light go away.
