Question about 2000 Ford Explorer

3 Answers

I have a 2000 V6 Ford Explorer Sport, 2wd w/manual tranny, my speedometer keeps jumping and truck periodically jerks when applying gas, I replaced the rear VSS but I continue to have the same problem. Also noted; I recently had the fuel pump replaced and did new sparkplugs and wires. Any help is greatly needed and appreciated! Thx, Angelo

    Thank you very much. I will check all 3 recomendations for the jerking. As for the ring gear, is that located in the read differentail? Is that something I can replace?

Difficult to diagnose here but if the jerking is spontanious with speedo fluctuations then it could be a problem with either the speedo cluster or the sensor ,To diagnose this problem you will need to take to a dealer who can read the ECU ,yes i know american market vehicles use different software to europeon market versions so you should be able to draw some codes which i cannot do on a europeon market vehicle but the circuits are interdependant on each other and iam not familar with a lot of american models .It could just be that the misfire on acceleration is a coil pack or a mass air flow sensor but as you will appreciate that without someone driving and passenger monitering the air intake flow and throttle position sensor and watching what happens when its driven then a nice fixya easy hit it their with a hammer soloution is very difficult .By the time you spend a lot of money on unecessary parts it could work out cheaper to just ask the dealer to have a look,i do know that on more modern vehicles the speedo cluster is a computer in itself and the speed is monitered by the ECU so if the speedo faulters it will affect things like fuel flow and gear changes on a vehicle with auto transmission .

The speedometer is operated by a counter in the rear differential. Either the teeth on the ring gear are chewed up or missing. The jerking when applying gas could be several things. A bad O2 sensor, coil pack, or ECM. If you have a check engine light on then I would suggest taking it to Autozone and having them put it on their scanner. They will do this for free and it will point you in the direction to find the miss in acceleration

How many quarts of trans fluid does a 2000 ford explorer v6 need

Did you check your trans dip stick? The tranny dip stick usually has a quart low mark. If this is a manual tranny, that is different, you didn't specify automatic or manual tranny?
{Automatic tranny, the spec is for dry fill, only. 10--12.7 quarts . Dry fill means not a drop of tranny fluid in the vehicle.}
You have to check proper fluid level, that is your responsibility. Your owners manual may have some of this info?

First thing would be to replace the fuel filter. Then spark plugs. You may have a weak fuel pump. A faulty fuel pressure regulator could also cause this.

It is located at the back of the engine near the fire wall. It is gray with a T connector at the top with two hoses coming off of the T and going forward into the intake manifold.
