What can be the reason for the vehicle not reading the chip ? When the theft light stays solid it starts, but when it flashers it wont start. I have replaced the battery in it, (the key)but it still acts up from time to time. It seems to do that more frequent.

Re: keys with chips
Make sure you have nothing elese atached to the key chain not other keys or any metal objets and try, but if you have nothing else i recomend you to call a locksmith mobile guy, and askthem if he has the machine to reprogram your key

try another key. the vehicle is equipped with a "smart key", the one you are using may be bad and not signaling the security system to allow start-up. The solid red means the vehicle is not reading the security chip in your key.
If you have another key try it.
Is the battery and connectors good? Low cranking amps will not signal the security system to shut of.
Make sure battery is strong and try leaving key in on position for 5 to 15 minutes. Then go to start. This works on many vehicles - but many are different. If chip key and theft module working leaving key on for several minutes is supposed to be long enough to tell system vehicle is not being stolen (not many thieves willing to sit in car waiting for 10 minutes). If chip key or key "reader" has failed you need dealer help.
If the anti theft light is blinking and you say that everything else fine.. My first thought is that the key is not programmed to the vehicle. The key has a internal chip that must be programmed to vehicle in order to start. Now my other question is, Is the key your using for the vehicle the original key or have you just recently had a key made? Regardless, in order for the yur Tribute to start, the key. Or keys have to be program to vehicle by your neighbor dealership. Thats the reason for your anti theft light is blinking
Generally speaking, if the security light is on and the engine will not crank, the VATS system is not reading the chip in the key. Either the chip has failed, or the sensor in the lock cylinder, or the VATS module. You could try a spare key but most times you have to have a shop make the repairs.
Usually the sensor in the key lock is not reading the chip in the key, or the chip has failed. I would try a spare key first. If the light stays on with both keys, you'll need to get the anti-theft system checked out.
You have have the orignal master key the car came with or have a new key programmed by your dealer.(some small shops have tools for this too). The key has a chip in it that the computer looks at (a code) that lets it start if it's right.if it gets damaged,or a non-chip key is inserted, the vehicle won't start and the anti theft light blinks.
Do your locks work on the SUV? Somethings the locks can set the anti theft off. But if your locks work then that means your the chip in the key is bad or its not reading the key at all. More than likely you will have to get a new key and have it reprogrammed. Dealer is the only place to get the key.
Either you may be using a key that you had copied from the original or your chip went bad in your original key. Most of cars now a days have the key censor in the key so if it is the incorrect key it will not start your car or if it does not read that chip it will not start
