They and all other van type vehicles, with transaxles, have a 30 year history of problems

I would say, having owned a trans repair shop years ago, there is a 90% chance, your going to rebuilt the trans

My suggestion, sell it, and buy a rear drive transmission vehicle only,no transaxles.

1990 Ford Windstar will not shift from first to second

check the trans fluid level and condition. if its dark in colour or has a bad smell to it the fluid is bad. these are known for tranny problems and probably will need rebuild or replacement.

Ford windstar 2001 Gearshift moves but will not shift into reverse. While shifting into reverse a bolt fell out from area where searing column is. How do I find out where it goes. drive works OK

This bolt connects 2 parts of gear shifter. It's getting loose. It's known problem. Look under the steering column. Jiggle the shifter you will see where the problem is.

2001 Windstar Limited 3.8L 95,000 miles original owner

I agree with Meister111. Very common for filter or the oil tap to pour on frame when filter is removed.
Keep an eye on the dipstick to see if any is burning or leaking that way.

I would also be concerned about the tranny (esp. if used for towing)... trannies are the weak link in minivans- even Hondas.

1995 Ford Windstar transmission is slipping and shifting hard

bad news, 1995 ford windstar transmissions fail extremely frequently at about 60000 miles, I would not waste money in a transmission flush as it will most likely not correct the problem. It is a dsign flaw, the transmission cannot handle the torque of the 3,8L engine and the 700Lbs of added weight of the windstar body.
I'd just use it untill it fails...

If the transmission neutralizes when you come to a stop, and will only move by shifting to second gear, then that means that the 1st gear clutch piston is cracked. This is a very common problem with the Windstars. Solution is to have the transmission repaired and have the aluminum piston replaced with an updated piston.
