Question about 2006 GMC Yukon Denali

1 Answer

I have an intermittent starting issue. Every now and then the car (2006 GMC Yukon Denali) will appear to have a completely dead battery. NO activity at all when you put the key in and turn it. No lights, no response on the guages, etc. Then, if you tap, tap the steering column just right.... ding ding life is restored to the vehicle and it will crank right up. It's not the battery terminals. I think wiring issue or short near the starter or ignition wires, or something in the column. Any ideas???

I would first suspect the mechanical ignition switch, mounted on top of the steering column by your feet. First remove the splash panel under the steering column.Mark the position with a marker or scribe - it's very important that you re - install that switch in the EXACT position it came from ! Remove the retaining nuts ( or bolts ) securing the steering column to the dash. Carefully lower the steering column - on the top side you'll see a rectangular plastic component with a wire harness on the left ( driver ) side and a metal rod out the back side coming toward the steering wheel. Dismount that ( it's the mech. ign. switch ) and unplug that harness. Inspect the plug for corrosion, burnt blades or rust. clean up any dirt and put dielectric grease on all blades / connections . SMELL the switch - if it smells kinda burned, replace it. If it's not stinky it may still be going bad. When you re - install, check operation of the switch before you remount the column. That metal bar activates the starter, and if the switch is too low your starter won't engage. Also be VERY careful with that airbag - a shock or hard bump to the steering column with the key on could deploy the airbag, potentially causing a serious injury.
Maybe take it to a shop and let THEM have the fun, heh?
Hope this helps!

sound like battery has weak or battery terminals and post need cleaning. have battery charged and checked, if battery good. alternator not charging battery. if battery over 5 years old more likely battery is bad.if battery too weak head lights wont turn on battery dead this time of year if battery old. cold weather will finish it out.

My 05 GMC Denali has an intermittent dead battery issue and dashboard gauges (gas/rpm) are all over the map..not stable.

It sounds like you have an earth problem. Check for security and cleanliness of the earth points from the battery and the earth cable from the chassis to the engine or gearbox. hope this helps

We had the same issue with our 2007 Yukon Denali XL. Died on us twice after sitting for short periods of time; once we watched a DVD with the engine off and battery died within 10 minutes. The dealership kept it overnight to troubleshoot why the battery died so quickly. They said the radio was "pulling" too much from the battery. (They supposably fixed it) But again a few days later the battery died again after sitting overnight. We brought it back to the dealership and they brought in a GMC "expert" to replace the entire DVD/CD/Navigation system. They also replaced our battery with a much larger battery, similar to the ones that GMC puts in there diesel trucks. They had our Denali for 5 days, but it appears to be fixed now.
Getting it fixed correctly wasn't without headaches, but it was all covered under warranty, including the battery. And they are updating the nav w/ the new edition disc as well for no charge.
