You need to find out why you have low oil pressure. It is normal that as engine rpm's increase, the oil pressure will rise- the oil pump is moving oil faster. Even though your light goes out, you could still have critically low oil pressure. There should be sufficient pressure at idle to keep the light off. The light will come on when your oil pressure is almost nil- I believe for some it's as low as 8 psi. Normally, oil pressure at idle is specified anywhere from 15 to 40 psi. You would have to check specifications for your Expedition. To verify oil pressure, hook up a mechanical gauge at the oil pressure sending unit on the engine block. Check with a local shop.
The causes run from easy, simple to budget busting ruin. Low oil level, wrong grade oil, real old oil, oil leaks, internal oil leaks, worn oil pump, worn crankshaft bearings. It was pretty common on older very high mileage cars to have a fluttering oil light at stops and idle. It was time for a rebuild, or time to look for another car.
Fist check oil level, the sensor is a pressure switch worked by oil pressure, hopefully the sensor has gone faulty. The oil pressure needs checking, if the oil pump or relief valve has gone faulty, the engine is being starved of lubrication and is causing internal damage. It is advisable NOT to run the engine till the pressure has been checked. (hope it's the sensor)
it means the oil pressure is low and may be low enough to damage the engine if you keep drving/running the engine. it would help if you could tell us the actual oil pressure, engine and mileage . basically, the oil pressure may be low enough to wreck your engine, then again it may be bs......
If you have low oil pressure you should have a waring light or message, the engine will become noisy and if it is not repaired very soon you will here first a loud tapping noise then a loud knocking deep in the engine, and finally the engine will worst case blow up and parts may come out the bottom through the oil pan. Never drive any car that shows a low oil pressure warning light or message, stop the engine right away and have it checked by a shop.
If you rev the engine does it go away? What is probably happening is that you have damaged or worn engine bearings. These bearings are designed so that there is a gap(clearance) between the crankshft and the bearing. This gives a space for the oil to pass through. If the clearance is too big the oil will pass through too quickly and the oilpump will not be able to build up pressure, even though the volume of oil pumped is sufficient. When the oil is cold it is thick and the sensor sees the pressure as normal. As the engine oil heats up it gets thinner and that causes the pressure to drop. Also the lower the RPM the lower the pressure. I would suggest you get the oil pressure tested at a service centre ASAP. Also have them test the sensor although sensor failure is rare. Low oil pressure will not just go away and causes more damage the more you drive increasing your repair bill considerably. I'd say you are already in for a cranshaft regrind and oversize bearings. Perhaps (if you're lucky) only just an oil pump although this is unlikely as bearings tend to fail before an oil pump does. I'd replace both at the same time since the engine has to come out for both these repairs. The cost of having the engine out a 2nd time far outweighs the saving on spares when doing both the first time.
this is a light that indicates low oil pressure or low level, 1st check the oil level in the engine when it is hot, if that is ok you will need to have the oil oil pressure tested with a specail mechanical test gauge, don't wait on this, low engine oil pressure or level can quickly lead to engine failure, have a shop check this ASAP if level is ok and light still comes on.
Hi. This issue has several causes, but the oil light indicator is a strong sign of low pressure in the engine. This will cause the engine lubrication rate to drop, thus, producing a illuminated oil light, and erratic Oil pressure readings. The necessary actions are to have a manual oil pressure test ran on this engine, asap. When running a manual oil pressure test, you will discover if the true oil pressure is low, or normal. If the test proves that the oil pressure is, indeed, low, this will confirm that the Oil pump is suspect.
Now, if the true readings given during the manual oil pressure test are indicating that the pressure is normal, this will be the result of a failed sending unit(oil pressure switch).
Check your oil, it may be low if not the oil pressure needs checked. The sending switch could be bad or you have low oil pressure. If you have low oil pressure have it fixed ASAP. The loss of oil pressure can cause severe engine damage.
