Question about 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe

1 Answer

Automatic Transmisson quit shifting into Drive and Overdrive, called Trans Shop and they said it sounds like either the shift solenoid or electrical. Is there a Fuse for this somewhere and if so where ? and also where would the Solenoid be. 1998 Chev Tahoe 2 wheel drive 350 vortec motor.

Sorry there is not a fuse for this one. It does sound like the two/three shift solenoid. These are real easy to replace. You have to drop the transmission pan( this is messy). Then pull the filter out. (this is messy too.) then the solenoid package is right there, big silver looking piece of metal.from ther you can do one of two things. One replace the whole package (several hundred dollars) Or replace the bad solenoid. this is found at the salvage yard. There are several different types of solenoids on your unit. the one you are looking for has three of them that are exactly alike, two in front one in back. The two that are beside each other are the ones to look at. I'm sorry I can't remember which is the 2/3 solenoid. When you go to get the solenoids at the salvage yard grab all three. Check them with an ohm meter. If you can't find out which one is the 2/3 solenoid replace them both. The solenoids are held in place with a clip, just pull it out and remove the solenoid. Caution sometimes the piston will pop out too, so when pulling the clip hold the solenoid. if the piston does come out it just slides back in.

The OD solenoid in the transmission or the transmission control module is defective. It's also possible the torque converter clutch plates are worn. That's where over drive comes from

I have a 1984 Nissan Sentra automatic runs fine does reverse first and second but won't shift into 3rd or overdrive what's wrong

If this is an automatic transmission (you did not say) it may be a shift solenoid in the trans has failed. Remove trans pan and you may well see the solenoid has come apart. Easy fix.

****** wont shift

Sounds like your trans is on the down side of burning up if it's an automatic. I'd have it towed to the shop. Could be as simple as a shifter solenoid, or a clogged valve body to as bad as having a trans rebuild.

1998 crown victoria transmisson( over drive)

Well it may not be a big enough problem to need to replace the trans.
It could be a solenoid or something electrical.
You need to know what the trouble codes are in the computer, and you may need to have a transmission shop take a look.
What you are saying is the trans will not shift into overdrive, hitting the button turns the overdrive off.

We have a problem with the over drive. ligth blinkns O/D at the shift

Try checking the transmisson fluid level if it is low this could cause the problem you are describing, any slight loss of transmiion fluid can cause the transmisson shift to shift incorrectly.

1992 A4LD trans problems.

Sounds like the shift kit is warn out in the transmission. The overdrive line may not be able to provide enough hydrolic pressure to engage the gears to move the truck. When you switch to regualr drive, that line is able to build the hydrolic pressure to engage the gears. At a certian speed (for the transmission, certian hydrolic pressure) there is enough pressure to engage the gears in overdrive, but go below that, and you have to start in drive again. If this is the case, there is no easy fix for that and I recomend taking it to a transmission shop to have your shift kit examined. Opening up an automatic transmission requires specalized tools, clean shop enviroment, and knowlage more then the average back yard machanic has.
