Question about Chevrolet Express

1 Answer

My chevy 1500 express passenger vans oil pressure gauge in the dash is reading at the highest number 80, it normally reads at around 55, it just started doing it, it has the correct amount of oil in it, could this be an oil pump, or switch, can I still drive it, there is no knocking or any noise at all....

Is it likely to be such an easy fix, I was reading on the net, that folks were talking blocked camshafts, bad oil pumps, blowing the filter off and seizing the engine etc, I have a 1500 mile drive to do in two days and at best very nervous of a huge bill or worse, as mentioned it just started today... thanks for all your help

The oil sending unit located on the top back of the engine is clogged. this will cause high readings.
You should replace it. Until you do it is OK to drive your vehicle. The part is $20 to$30. If you can remove the engine housing in the van, the sending unit will be staring you in the face. It is about 3" long and about 1&1/4 " in diameter at the base. And of course there is wire/wires going to it.

Thats news to me. If there is over pressure the first indication of it would be at the oil filter. it would first swell up. and leak like crazy. I haven't heard of blocked crankshafts, even the ones that never change there oil only add. I have changed a few of these and all it really does is wear out the bearings prematurely. If you are still nervous, call a dealer and ask, they are ususally very knowegdably in there areas and will give you some insight. Randy

I have a 2006 chevy silverado 5.3L..When in idle oil pressure gauge goes to 80 and when i accelerate ail pressure goes to zero it the oil sending unit?

It could be the sending unit. If the truck is low on oil it will cause something similar. Be sure the oil level is topped up. The only way to be sure it so measure the actual oil pressure at the engine with a proper gauge..

Oil pressure gauge is reading 80 psi. I had the

The oil sending unit is located on the engine block behind the drivers cylinder head area. You have to climb up on the motor to see it cause it is hard to see behind the wiring harness. You may also want to purchase a new sending unit because it is very long and you might need to buy the sending unit socket to replace it.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Oil pressure gauge reads 80 yesterday it ran normal

The higher the oil pressure the better it is, if you had a recent oil change the oil pressure should be high. there is no problem with having high oil pressure.

Oil pressure gauge reads 80 psi with engine off and pegs running

That is probably a defective oil pressure gauge or a broken oil pressure sender, it reads 80 psi just because that is the maximum value allowed.

Pressure can be verified by reading it with a gauge tool.
If you really have pressure over 70 psi when engine is running then start replacing the oil filter, and check that the oil lines from pump are not obstructed, if there is nothing in there then replace oil pump.

If instead the gauge reads 80 with engine off, that is a defective pressure gauge.
