Yes there is a security reader in the ignition. you might try changing the lock cylinder to the original key and it should start.

Did you use the same key? bet not. the security system is shutting down the engine because it doesn't see the correct signal from the ignition key.

97 marquis fires up but dies

Do you have power to the fuel pump once the key ios released? Try this, start the engine and carefully let the ignition switch back off until the starter is not engaged, does it stay running? If so you need a new ignition starter switch, the switch is located on the top bottom of the steering column under the dash.

Replaced steering coulmn now it will not start

The Passive Anti-Thft System (PATS) in your vehicle prevents the vehicle from being started with the wrong key. Even if the key is mechanically able to turn the ignition lock cylinder, the digital signal from the key must be programmed so the PATS will accept the signal from the new key.
You have a couple of choices. You can change the lock cylinder out with the lock cylinder from the original steering column so the original keys can be used. You can remove the lock cylinder from the new column and have a locksmith re-key the lock cylinder to accept the original keys, then reinstall it into the new steering column. Or you can take the entire vehicle to a professional auto service facility that has the computer equipment necessary to reprogram your computer to accept the new keys.

Couldn't Turn off my 96 Grand Marquis

Seems your ignition swith has come disconected from the key switch. The actual swith is not the key. The key links to a switch on top of the steering column down around the pedals. Or the switch itself is broken free. The switch is replaceable although a pain to access. No need to pull out the steering column. Good luck.

(1)look at the wires in the steering column where it adjust up and down and see if some wires are touching inside the steering cover.
(2) it a reason to suspect a bad ground to the motor also will cause it too

your mechanic is wrong!!!!cause i have never held of or come across a module doing such things.

Interior lights and wont lock

hi,
wow, Sounds like the problems coming from inside the steering column hopefully. I had a 97 Grand Prix that refused to let me have the key some days. That problem was the shift interlock safety switch and we bypassed it your problem definately sounds like its in the column or maybe the shifter. you need one of those switches bypassed or fixed. late nineties pontiacs and those olds aleros had those qwerks like that, once you get them ironed out they are halfway decent cars, hang on to that car if you can it will be worth some money someday. good luck with your other stuff also. one day at a time
