Question about 1998 Ford Escort

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Ford Escort that drives fine and then all of the sudden we lose accleration and the car eventually dies. After sitting for a few minutes it will start back up drive a few more miles and then repeats the same problem. Its now starting to buck when its stalling out. What could be the problem?

Okay maybe I should say that I am a girl and have basic knowledge of a car but no idea how to check these things. I know that its fuel injected but not how to check the injectors, or the spark. Lets just pretend you're talking to a car idiot..lol.

Hi,
There are a couple of things that could be at fault here. 1. The ignition system is faulty. 2. The fuel system is faulty . You will need to check that there is spark when it dies out and also check that you have fuel supply to the fuel filter after it dies out.
Let me know once you have checked these and I can give you further instructions.
Thanks
Jason

Ah ok...lol You will need tools for this and if you haven't done this sort of thing before then it will be difficult to explain.
Do you have anyone that is able to help you out or would you just like to know what the faults could be.

Both turn signals on my 1998 Ford Escort zx2 don't flash.

The 98 Escort is actually a Mazda 323 with Ford trim. It uses a solid state flasher relay for both turn signals and hazard lights.
The relay is behind the speedometer. My guess is the relay has died.
You can look it up online or check with your local auto parts store to get a visual.

recheck your cam timing belt, sounds like it jumped on you. PCV valves generally plug into the valve cover and you would have had to seen it when you pulled the head. not all cars have them

The check engine light indicates a problem. You need to have the codes read. Most parts stores do this for free. Write down the codes and ask them what they mean, and what u should do. You can come back here if u need more info.

ZX2 ESCORT 1998

You haven't flooded the engine correct, check the spark plugs. Also, how fresh is the gas? Try shaking the car to get the gas mixed up and try cleaning out the cylinders with a torch to blow out excess gas. You should also either try cleaning the spark plugs or replace them if they look bad. It is starting up fine, correct? The alternator is good, right? I believe it is since it sounds like you didn't drive it long enough to drain the battery but check it anyway. By losing power, did the electronics start shutting off first or did the engine die first as this would show whether the alternator is bad or not. Please answer my questions and get back to me on what shut off first when it died and I will help you narrow down the problem with this car.

good luck
