SOURCE: I was driving my 1989

There is a HUGE variety of things that could cause this but a very common issue with these trucks is the ignition coil. It is connected to the center of the distributer via a spark plug looking wire. Pull the wire from the distributor and place near the frame if it is sparking (while trying to start the truck) it is good if not replace it.
Another common issue tends to be the crank position sensor located on the back of the engine on top of the bell housing. You can get to it from the top of the car at the VERY back of the engine bay. This is also some thing you might want to have checked.
I wouldn't go spending money on parts though before you have a good idea of what is wrong with the truck first. Any more information that may be helpful?

I would check Cam Position Sensor as is directly related with ignition. Power loss is due to the ECU going on "limp mode" to prevent further damage.
I hope this helps!

1994 Jeep Cherokee is bogging down and getting hot!

ok if the timing chain was bad it would not run. bogging down is from increased resistance from something. since you have overheating i would guess the water pump broke when you heard the sound. ther is a belt around it and that would cause this. since it idles fine i would wait till it is cold and open the radiator then run the engine and see if you see water moving in the radiator. if nothing after 10 min then i would suspect the water pump. watch that you don't overheat the engine doing this. that would cause other problems that could be more expensive to fix good luck

89 jeep cherokee 4.0 it bogs down and will accelerate in drive

Make sure that the timing is correct and that the spark from the coil is healthy. Problem can also be with the overdrive in the converter. If it's stuck on it can do that too.

Check spark to plugs. Possible crankshaft position sensor. Located at rear of engine between engine and trans.

I have an 89 Jeep Cherokee and it will crank over but not start

O2 sensor will not do that. Check the basics...do you have fuel...Do you have spark? I would make a bet on it either being a crank position sensor or fuel filter. Next good guess is the ignition coil. Check these items (in order) and see what you find. Test specs are found in any manual. (if you need specifics I can give them to you. You will need a decent volt/ohm meter to test.

1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport bogs down

I just posted a simular resonse in another post. What is sounds like it that the fuel pump is starting to go bad. When it heats up after use the pressure drops not pusing the full amount of fuel. Whenits cold it works fine until it heats back up 10-20 mins. remember fuel in the tank helps cool the pump so keep it soewhat full but sounds like the damage is done. your probally gonna have to replace it.

This model has a tranny computor under the dash on the right side screwed to the bottom of the dash. If I remember correctly, there is also an inline fuse attached to the harness. Check the fuse.
