In recent years the trend has been very much towards front wheel drive cars with most manufacturers favoring this approach in modern design. One notable exception to this is BMW who continue to produce rear wheel drive cars off the production line.

In terms of your Pontiac there are few cons if any. in terms of reliability with rear wheel drive and if it is good enough for BMW in modern day production it is not going to give any extra problems from that point of view.

The 1991 version Firebird has been known to give problems with fuel injectors and also the coolant fan switch is a common failure item as is the ignition lock barrel. Apart from this its reliability is regarded as fairly good.

Motoring enthusiasts will say in fact that rear wheel drive provides a much better drivers experience as there is no additional driving force interfering with the steering. Rear wheel drive allows the steering to do what it is meant to do i.e steer!

In terms of handling, rear wheel drive can leave your car a bit more liable to tail spin if the power is suddenly applied at the wrong time. One other major con is if you live in an area prone to snowfall rear wheel drive is less able to provide and maintain good traction because the weight of the engine is at the front and the rear wheels cannot bite into traction because of this.

Obviously the condition and service history of the actual vehicle in question is the key to predicting its reliability into the future.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Having problems with my 1998 Pontiac firebird. When I sit with the air on my car sometimes start to shake or even smoke. I don't know if it's the exhausts or something dealing with it breathing. Whatever...

A bunch of things can cause this.
It could be the engine idle speed is too low, can be caused by a faulty Idle Air Control valve. Watch the rev counter when it does it and see if it's very low. See if it rises when you turn off the air con. The air con puts a load on the engine which should be adjusted for by the IAC valve (automatically opens the throttle very slightly to keep the engine speed from getting too low).
Also possible to be fuel pressure, Mass Air Flow sensor, ignition coil, spark plugs or even a blocked air filter.
Is the check engine light on?
Try looking at Pontiac firebird forums. Google search firebird idle faults. Good luck.

Firebird clutch periodically goes bang when engaging

If you have a cable operated clutch then check the engine mounts especially the rear mount or reaction rod on a transverse transmission.. If you had a clutch problem it would be there all the time and the indications are that it would be slipping , shuddering , grabbing and generally be a pain in traffic. I would be looking for a reason to allow the engine /transmission to get out of alignment and cause binding of the drive shafts . If front wheel drive check cv joints and suspension points . If rear wheel drive check for problems in the slip joint or "u" joints.

What makes my 2002 Pontiac Firebird grind when driving and/or turning?

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Jack up front end and spin wheels by hand and listen for grind. Same for rear wheels. Make sure brake linings are good all around. Do the swerve test. Drive down road bout 40mph and swerve moderately one side to other. If noise gets louder with weight shifted to one side more than other its most likely a wheel bearing.

I need towing a firebird 500 miles, how can i do

If towing that far of a distance place the front wheels on a tow dolley and pull it from the front with the car in nuetral. That is entriley to far to be pull from the rear will mess up the steering linkages.

Looks like you're engine's skipping and it could use a good tune-up, spark plug and wires, distributer cap and rotor, air and fuel filters and you should be in bisness.
